Heather with the Weather

The Morris Marina was a great little rally car! Imagine the Allegro was entered in to Group B? Ah what could’ve been. Hedgerows and ditches filled with Max Power-ed Allegro’s rather than Monetgo’s, Metro’s and Maestro’s?

Visions now of Tommi Mäkinen, clutching a square steering wheel, tearing across Kenya in a Group B, diorrhea brown Allegro. What could’ve been indeed…

EDIT: So apparently there WAS an Allegro rally car prototype!!? First I’ve ever heard of one even being considered let alone actually being built. Rally fans rejoice! :heart_on_fire:

We’d agreed on frequencies for the summits, Fraser would do 2m and 20m, and I’d do 40m and 15m (or w/e) so I didn’t call on 2m, and just used it to check he wasn’t eating the sweeties without me.

So what is your preference for malt loaves? In Northern Ireland we have the Veda (Irwins and Sunblest also Ormo which was the best but I haven’t seen any for a while) and I think it was an Ulster Scots recipe - unlike Soreen there are no raisins!

Soreen original, sliced with butter.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen alternatives. Recently there have been other flavours of Soreen’s, like banana and lemon. In fact visiting their website shows me a whole world of malty goodies. However, I’d still fall back on the original one.

Original Malt loaves were made in Dundee (just checked ) but I think that style is just made in Norn Iron now. Yes lots of Ballyrashane butter and cheddar cheese!!

Now that’s a good idea. I usually take it out the packet, slice it, butter it and then put it back together into the packet. I’ll often take cheese and crackers in a sandwich style, but maybe now I need some some slices of cheese for the malt loaf…

The weather has also reminded me of this:

I love malt loaf - Soreen particularly, alas those days are gone for me. Is there any (‘simulated’) malt loaf available that is GF? I’ve never seen any in the shops.

Schar makes the only GF bread loaves that don’t taste like cake. Every other GF loaf is like cake. They don’t do anything like Soreen unfortunately - that I know of anyway.

EDIT: Found this. May be of interest to some folks here too.

With my Hasselblad, the leaf shutters are in the lenses rather than the camera bodies, so I’d keep one lens tucked inside my jacket pocket, and shoot with the other til I started hearing the shutter speeds slow down. Then I’d swap the lenses over, allowing one to thaw out in my jacket, while the other gradually froze into uselessness, and repeat til my fingers gave up.

But yes, with the price of film these days, I’m far more likely to take a digital camera and just have a wee pouch of lithium batteries tucked away inside my jacket instead.

Another excellent report Alex… an excellent read. The pairing of 104 and 105 are still very much on the “to do” list for when Paul G4MD and myself are back in action. Our previous attempt in 2020 was cut short before we even got out of the car due to Paul feeling unwell requiring a prompt return to base at Stirling.

As for that shot of Fraser lounging in the heather on Newtyle, well that just about sums up the character of the summit. I used a similar spot back in 2015 and adopted a similar pose. :joy:
