Hello all,
Due to lack of local interest in VHF/UHF I thought I would have a go at HF again ( wasn’t my thing first around) to give me something to do in the winter months when I get a bit more spare time. As I may not like it I don’t wish to spend a fortune but wondered if any of you had tried these cheap SDR transceivers .CHEAP SDR TX/RX
Are they totally naff ? My main purpose will be NVIS to try and keep my coverage local-ish on 40 meters I’m going to struggle with any longer wavelengths.
The problem with these radios is that they are all copies of the tr(u)SDX with no real quality control. Another option is to try Xiegu radios. At that price point look at the G106 (AROUND £200). Another option that I would totally recommend is the Xiegu G90. Bigger and with 20w output, it is a monster.
If you do only CW, many of these usdx radios will work well enough - but you never know what you’ll get. If you are looking for reliable performance with CW and SSB:
QMX from QRP-labs, just above 100 Euros if you build it yourself, the quality is excellent.
Or for an excellent and low price radio, the XIEGU G90. In particular if you consider that a first rate tuner is built it is a great proposition.
+1 for the QMX. They are great value for money and work very well on CW and SSB.
I have a couple of uSDX and a TrUSDX, they don’t perform too well on SSB TX and mine have a lot of birdies on RX. Ok as a backup rig in the pack as they don’t weigh much.
That said, it’s amazing what the uSDX and TruSDX do with such a small processor.
