Hi Fraser,
I also would prefer actual on air tests rather then measuring swr. Inserting the meter changes the topography. The ground plane on a HH is aways iffy and add-ons, even a small meter, has to be significant.
Of course if you get an swr over 10:1 it’s probably a safe bet it isn’t going to go well on a tx/rx test.
