GW SOTA Completion

Me and my dad Tom M1EYP have now activated and qualified all SOTA summits in GW. Here’s a photo of us celebrating on our final GW SOTA summit Disgwylfa Fawr GW/MW-038 which is where we are now.

Congrats to both Tom and the England AM Jimmy! Not so many have done that, completed activating GW, tougher than the G/LD in my opinion, a lot bigger area and more rugged for sure.

Congrats both, and thanks for our first S2S contact.

Congrats to you both on the nice achievement.
I saw MW1EYP/P spotted on 7.032 this morning, but I didn’t copy you, Tom, and I left the shack to enjoy our sunny day in the outside.
Shame I couldn’t chase you in this special day, but we can’t have it all and the time I spent out in the sunshine was highly enjoyed.

It was interesting to hear the several reports of inclement weather to the north, south and east of us today. Allan GW4VPX also warned of a storm that was supposed to be arriving in the afternoon.

As it turned out, it was a gorgeous day all day. Which might sound surprising or indeed lucky - but it was in fact exactly what the Met Office forecast for our location had promised!

Excellent activation with which to “slay the dragon”. Lots of QSOs including lots of S2S.

Best DX for both of us was Brazil on 15m.

Fish and chips from Silverfish in Newtown is still superb. We enjoyed our celebratory homemade Scotch eggs, mulligatawny soup and Welsh bottled ales on the summit. We have got the Welsh cake supplies to take home with us!

It’s only taken me 6617 days - or around 18 years 2 months!

First GW SOTA activation was 22nd March 2003 - Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043.

Jimmy was faster, with his GW SOTA debut on 2nd October 2005 - Tal y Fan GW/NW-040 - although he - as a ten year old, with his five year old brother - were with me on that first Welsh SOTA trip in 2003.

Jimmy took this photo on that activation 18 years ago:
