Excellent work Viki. You have made the best choice, (in my opinion). And carried it out with all due care and attention. 73 de Paul M0CQE.
Good work. Well done Viki.
This is vital. The more complaints, the sooner theyâll have to act on it.

Itâs now on my list of summits to do.
Dave
I noticed this âmessâ today on my activation of this summit. On a public right of way!!! Thankfully someone has cut it off one side !
I was lucky, no farmer and got a heads up (on 40m while activating) to keep low with the farmer⌠I kept low key and this wasnât hard the bracken was huge !
I didnât see this thread first time around. However:-
Your local library might hold the definitive legal treatise on the laws associated with =Public Rights of Ways.:-
âRights of Way, a guide to law and practiceâ by John Riddall and John Trevelyan. Its very readable - even solicitors find it simple, although some of them are chancers as are their clients regarding Public Rights Of Way.
There is no law stopping you from operating radios on either open access land or Public Rights of Way. Its quite simple. (although I appreciate Tomâs concerns re given sota a âbadâ, name) And in any case a landowner would have to identify you and take you to court and prove that your use of the radio was not âopen-air recreationâ- and thats assuming the Rights of Way officer in the National Park hasnât successfully resolved the issue beforehand.
When I was there, I could hear the farmerâs tractor but he was lower down beyond the summit on the LHS and luckily never showed up. Did you reverse your van into the single parking spot at the start of the track as per blog post from @G4OBK ?
Thatâs right outside the farmhouse! And my van is a long wheel base âŚâŚ I didnât know about the hassle at that point but parking there looked pretty risky to send someone irate! .
So I parked in a wider part of the lane a bit further down. Must admit, when I heard there was problems with the farmer, this did worry meâŚ. Because it still wasnât the best !
I saw the suggested parking spot when I activated and didnât think Iâd be able to park in there without blocking the access.
I walked up from Dolgellau so parking wasnât an issue.
Well done on reporting this to the national park people but, in my view, threatening behaviour like this should be reported to the police. If you were in any way in fear of being assaulted, you should tell the police that.
As an aside, If heâs a shotgun or firearms license holder, which many farmers are, acting aggressively to someone could well result in him losing his firearms.
I remember this hill being discussed on the old Relative Hills Newsgroup, way back in 2008. I canât find any live reference now, but I clipped it at the time to note as a possibly troublesome hill. After an activation on Cadair in 2011, we had a look at access from Kings YHA, and found the signs removed and the path blocked. We didnât persevere. So access problems have been going on a while.
There is a certain amusement value making it worth quoting the original source - rhb.

AD suggested that I post this info: Went to climb above hill from car-park at SH698153 last month but farmer at Tyddyn-Evan fychan, who was outside his house would not let me.a) Not allowed because no paths over his land
b) Not allowed because wall near the summit had no gate or style
c) Not a 150 metres drop when I had to explain to him what the hill was all about.
d) Anyone who claimed to have been up the hill was lying because he knew that no-one went up it.
I politely took my leave and went round to the opposite side at Gellilwyd and climbed it via the marked path although it was hard in deep bracken higher up.

My apologies to the original writer, but I canât find the original online.
Richard (Often listens, occasionally calls).
I have just spotted a post on the Relative Hills of Great Britain (RHB) Facebook Group (The Relative Hills Of Britain | Moel Fynydd (formerly Craig y Castell, Marilyn) and two Tumps (Craig y Castell and Dol Gledr today | Facebook) that was posted earlier this evening about RHB baggers recently bagging Craig y Castell (now renamed to Moel Fynydd) GW/NW-074. They met the GOML near to the summit and the GOML made it clear that hill baggers were very unwelcome despite the fact that this is access land.
Viki @M6BWA - what was the final outcome with regards to your contact with the Access and Well-Being Manager for the Snowdonia National Park because it seems that despite your issue with the GOML being over a year ago, he has not been dealt with.
Roger @MW0IDX - I would be really interest to hear your thoughts with regards to this as you are the GW Association Manager? It seems to me that despite this SOTA summit being on access land, there is a GOML there preventing access for a least a year to my best knowledge. Looks this is a SOTA summit that needs to be renamed also.

The renaming might help if the new name starts appearing on OS maps.
I think âCraig y Castellâ on the 1:25,000 map refers to the earthwork just above the farm (near the 252m spot height) rather than the Marilyn summit which is about 500 m away.
What is a GOML?
âGet off my landâ
Grumpy Old Mad Landlord
Happilly, not something we come across in GM (with a certain exception)
Actually Richard, itâs âget orf my landâ. Thatâs how the farmers say it in their dialect.
Jimmy M0HGY
Wheres that? Nowhere in GM/ES I can think of. Glen Lyon?
Glen Lyon North Chesthill Estate but many Perth estates in general. Generally many Perthshire estates are known making life awkward for walkers thus it being known as a âPerthshire Welcomeâ. c.f. closing of parking area at Kenknock and moving 1.5km away from the Munros and blocking the forest harvesting car park at Guay âbecause they canâ not because there were problems with parked cars.
One very famous one was The Great GOML of Deephope (GM/SS-168) reported to and known by âthe polisâ for approaching, raging, going bright red and swearing at walkers whilst holding a loaded shotgun. Luckily for walkers in The Borders he went so bright red one day he dropped dead. No tears were shed.
There are a fair enough number up here despite our wonderfully enlightened laws regarding access.
If a summit has public access, then following the rules we are allowed access to that summit.
Some activators are going to be luckier than others in avoiding the landowner, the one time I activated Craig y Castell there was no sign of anyone else about.
All we can do is put pressure on the appropriate authorities if we have an unpleasant encounter while on a SOTA summit, and encourage other walking groups to do the same.
As others have commented, I would not mention amateur radio in a report, the argument is about access not recreational activities on the summit.
I think Viki calmly handled her situation well! Would be interesting to hear what response she got from the authorities.
I have not seen any comment on RHB, from Myryddyn Phillips or the pendantic groups.io about the name change. The only change Iâve seen is on the hillbaggers website which was back in February.
As Peter PJE mentioned, the os maps still show Craig y Castell. I will have to dive deeper and find out more.
