Great Gable, Kirk Fell and Pillar from Wasdale NT campsite.

I booked two nights camping at the National Trust campsite at Wasdale. This was an easy walk to the Wasdale Head Inn for evening meal, which was very busy both nights I visited.

I set off about 7am with Great Gable G/LD-005 my first destination. I found this a challenging climb and was glad to reach the top, three hours after setting off. Drink and snacks consumed, 2m FM contacts made, I then set off for Kirk Fell G/LD-014.

On Kirk Fell I found my Yaesu FT-70DE had a flashing battery symbol on transmit, I plugged in my 12V 4Ah LiPo Tracer pack, which cleared the warning. All was working well and I finished the activation with a S2S with G8CPZ/P - Andy on G/NP-016 Dodd Fell Hill. I then set off for Pillar G/LD-006.

I really enjoyed the climb to Pillar. The RAF made a quick appearance, two black jets screaming through Black Sail pass below me. Quite impressive. The 2m FM activation completed quickly I then set off back to Wasdale.

I took the Scree path between Green Crags and Elliptical Crag back down to Wasdale, how I regretted it! I didn’t enjoy it at all and wished I’d retraced my steps back off Pillar and then used the Black Sail Pass footpath to get back to Wasdale.

Really enjoyed my day out. Total time out was 10hrs 20mins and I covered 10.29 miles.

Equipment used was a Yaesu FT-70DE with SSM-17A mic, Sotabeams 2m Bandpass filter, 1/2 wave dipole and Tracer 4Ah LiPo.

Thanks to all the chasers.

Exciting stuff, well done Ian,

With a big pack it is an interesting decent to Black Sail from Kirk Fell.

I totally agree about your descent route from Pillar, horrid chumbly boulders all just at the angle of rest. Another example of the Devil’s work perhaps.
The route looks so inviting from both the top and the bottom, best avoided in preference to back tracking to Black Sail etc.
