glueing rands back onto boots

Anyone got any advice on what glue type / brand to use to glue peeling rubber rands back onto boots?

The crown-fern in ZL seems to destroy them …

When I was looking at the steps needed to resole my Meindl boots, before I found a new pair at a good price, I watched some Youtube videos showing Vibrams soles being stuck back. They used a contact adhesive that looked remarkably like EvoStik contact adhesive. Normally a primer was applied to stop the glue sinking in too much.

The normal problem with these things is getting everything cleaned up and prepared. It also looks like the cobbler applies the glue and then lets the glue dry somewhat before placing it under a heat lamp then offering the items up. Like all things, the more you do it the easier it gets.

I don’t know what the availability will be in NZ, EvoStik in UK Contact adhesives | Evo-Stik DiY Website

You could also ask a cobbler what (s)he would use?

I used to use black Araldite, but I haven’t seen any for years so I don’t know if it is still available.

I looked at another video and the glue used by the cobbler for all kind of leather sticking is this:

Thanks for that. The Colle de Cologne is available in ZL, though not through the post as it’s classed a a DG! Will see if I can find a retailer. The nearest cobbler is 200km away, and the nearest good one over 500km. But sounds like saddlers also use that glue, and they’re much thicker on the ground. Hopefully I’ll find someone local who can sell me some.

It’s a specialist Bostick contact adhesive that was used in NZ for glueing boot soles.
It is also used for glueing up chloroprene inflatable boats. You might have more luck around your parts finding someone who fixes inflatables and has the glue.

I have a (probably long dried out tin) somewhere for fixing boats. I’ll look in the shed, it might have the a number on it if I can find it. I recall it was far more expensive than you would want to pay to fix your rands. As Andy says, there was a primer and you do it hot, IIRC.

F2 contact glue didn’t last a week when I tried it.
You might try a urethane sealant.
I can’t say I have had anything stay stuck to the outside of boots, once you give them a few days in streams.

I use E6000 for this kind of job and let it cure for 72 hours before using the item. It works on many materials and has become my “go to” adhesive.

I tried old favourite Liquid Nails, thinking if it holds houses together (some Aussie builders think it does) it might hold the flappy sole bits down on an old pair of boots. It held for a week or two, always gave way. It’s also a b*gger to get off your fingers.

Ended up using just ados F2 to get me through the next stint(before simon’s warning). Will report backand keep trying for the good stuff.
