Yesterday, July 3rd, an ice mass collapsed down the slopes of Marmolada, I/TN-324.
Sadly, several hikers were killed or injured.
My sympathy goes to the victims and their families.
About 20 years ago I was climbing the same route. With rising temperatures it’s getting more dangerous.

My brother and I climbed the Marmolada in August 1983. The entire mountain above the little cable “car” terminus (more like baskets actually) was covered in ice and snow. We used ice axes and crampons just about the whole way. So much ice has been lost since then.
I was back at the Mer de Glace in Chamonix in 2016, that glacier has retreated a lot too
A big but announced tragedy unfortunately! sooner or later it had to happen.
10 Degrees centigrade on the summit, nearly no new snow this year to protect the glacier.
