The most extreme version I had of this was winter fog on the saddle above Greaney Hut. White sky on white snow and completely unable to distinguish between the two. Absolutely no idea of whether I was on flat ground, slope or about to walk off a cliff. The only contrast was the ‘floaties’ abberations in my eyes’ vision. I resorted to kicking snowballs ahead of me and watching them roll to determine where the ground was and what it did. Scary enough on familiar ground with a past gps track to follow … imagine being in unknown country.

There’s trainers and trainers.
I have found North Face Hedgehogs to be excellent. I got over 1000km out of a pair before I wore 40% the sole away. They are still fully waterproof. Not cheap unless you find a pair in the TNF outlet store.
I have some Tog24 “fully waterproof” off road trainers like the Hedgehogs but £49 not £159. They’re used for dogging and whilst the tread is lasting well they are “fully transparent to water”. For walking the dog they’re OK.
