Getting around Southern Germany with out a car??

Hello,
Work is sending me to southern Germany for a week or so. Im staying near the office in Reutlinger, I’ve never been. Im planing to take my KX2,

Achalm DM/BW-099 seems to be right around the corner.

DM/BW-852, DM/BW-058, and DM/BW-846, seem to be reasonable as well.

Will a taxi just drop you off in front of a military base? (in the case of DM/BW-058)

Are there bike rentals? Sorry just from a west coast American perspective I wind up driving for a few hours to get to a summit…

thanks

Hi Lincoln,

Achalm (DM/BW-099) can be reached in about one hour from Reutlingen central station by foot (approx. 4 km and 350 vertical metres). There is an urban bus which helps reducing the walking time (need to figure out which one).

I believe the taxi driver won’t care about your destination but a taxi to one of the nearby summits and back will be rather expensive.

When will you be staying here? Maybe we can do a joint activation. My QTH is about 10 km west of Reutlingen.

Hi Lincoln,
I think you mixed some summits…
“Herrenwald” is not a military base  The link at sotl.as is wrong because it is the “Herrenwaldkaserne” near Stadtallendorf (Hesse) about 100 km north of Frankfurt /Main.
To get to DM/BW-852 you have to take the train from Reutlingen to Hechingen and then to Burladingen. Then its a walk about one hour.
Burg (DM/BW-058) is no military area either. Take the train from Reutlingen to Albstadt-Ebingen and change there to a bus which brings you to Onstmettingen Rathaus. From there its about 50 minutes to reach the “Burg”-summit.
Burg Hohenzollern ( DM/BW-846) has a bus going from Hechingen: Your way to the Castle - Burg Hohenzollern Anyway a lot of tourists…
Have fun in Baden-Wuerttemberg (DM/BW)!

Getting around Germany without a car.

The public transport is quite good. Sometimes, however, there are hiccups and delays.

On https://sotl.as you can see bus and train stops and their names, if you zoom in.
Using the Website of Deutsche Bahn (main German Railway operator), you can select your starting point and destination, eg for DM/BW-058 this would be Reutlingen to Onstmettingen / Rosensteinstrasse. This would cost you between 1:37 and 2:15 hours and 25Euro (one way). Make sure to select your back journey as well so as to know when to go back from the summit (as a rule of thumb, I estimate the same time going down as I used when going up (take note of the time used!), although getting down should be faster).

There are ways to get cheaper tickets, such as day tickets or Germany Ticket.

Martin has already given valuable information. About the cheapest way to travel: NALDO (https://www.naldo.de/) is a “Verkehrsverbund” (transport association) all your planned summits belong to. The map: https://www.naldo.de/fileadmin/media/tickets/Preisuebersicht-TWP/nal_Tarifwabenplan-01-01-2025.pdf The max. price you have to pay for one day is 19,90 Euro (Day ticket for the whole “Verkehrsverbund”). You can get all informations here: RSV-Mobilitätszentrale Eberhardstraße 1 72764 Reutlingen Tel.: 07121/9430-65. Fax: 07121/9430-66.
