G0VWP Silent Key

Dear SOTA Friends

I am sorry to have to report that Veteran Soldier Terry Sayner G0VWP, SOTA Activator and Chaser, passed away last night.

I am told by a close friend of Terry that he had been ill since September and was diagnosed with terminal cancer then.

If I hear of any funeral arrangements and the family think it appropriate to circulate the information, I will publish this on the reflector. It is likely that any service will take place in York.

Sad, sad news. Terry and I had so so many contacts both as fellow activators and chasers…a SOTA stalwart for years. Met up with him a couple of times at the Blackpool Radio Rally. Condolences to his family.

Thanks for the post Phil.

Sad news. Terry many times in my log chasing my activations from home, and many times S2S.

Terry had the expert chaser knack of anticipating an activation. So many times, I set up on a summit, found a potential 40m SSB QRG, asked if the frequency was in use - and back came the reply “G0VWP here for you Tom”. This before any self-spot was posted. Terry just seemed to know where and when to monitor from the alerts alone!

Terry will remain visible in SOTA for a considerable time with 187 activator uniques to his name.

My condolences to Terry’s family and friends.

Oh this is sad news. Terry was in my logs many times as a chaser or for S2S QSOs. I had the pleasure of meeting him many times at Blackpool where we had a many an enjoyable chat.

He always looked immensely fit and healthy and didn’t believe him when he told me how much older he was than he looked. So it’s quite hard to think that he’s now gone.

Condolences to friends and family.

RIP Terry.

Oh, this is really sad news. I spoke to Terry many times and he provided help on many occasions with his knowledge of various summits, not least the means of gaining access to Swinside in the Lake District which at the time was a no-go summit.

Many thanks for letting us know Phil. Please pass our condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Terry. Another instantaneously recognisable voice that will be missed in SOTA.

Terry was often in my logs over the years. Last time I worked him was in May 2024 using OE20SOTA.

Sad news indeed,
Terry accompanied me on the first activation of the three most northern mainland Sotas at Cape Wrath.
A nice guy and a happy chappy.

Very, Very sad news. I met Terry once and worked him many times, he was one of the “always there” chasers for me and I really enjoyed hearing him on-air. He will indeed be greatly missed in the SOTA community. My condolences to his family and friends.

Terry has called me over 80 times since 2016, but less frequently in recent years.

At the last qso 2023 I was very happy to hear his distinctive voice again. I told him that too, and that was a good thing!

Now he’s listening to us on cloud 9…vy 73 Terry!
