G/SC-008: Fast 2m activation, with the addition of a beautiful walk.

17/07/24

Having been accustomed to calling CQ on 2m numerous times (usually taking 1h to activate in the G/SC area), I had a lovely surprise activating G/SC-008.

With ample parking available within 5 minutes walk from the summit, I headed up to the trig point for a planned 10:00 UTC activation time.

It was all done in 8 minutes with 5 QSOs. Many thanks to @M6BWA and @M0JLA - S2S contacts are the most exciting - I expect you had a lovely day at G/WB-019.

To make the most of the beautiful weather and scenery, packing my kit away soon after qualifying seemed the most sensible option.

Having spent a lot of time on Exmoor and the Quantocks as of late, there’s a certain charm to experience where Dorset meets Wiltshire. Do take advantage of the walks on offer from this summit. :+1:

I’ve attached a screen shot of the walk but there were a few detours that you need to be mindful of when looking at it in terms of access and rights of way (circled in pink):

  1. You’ll see that we were searching for access to a hill fort at Winkelbury Hill - we had taken a recognised path from Cranborne Droves Way towards Cross Farm however we weren’t sure whether this would give us access to the hill fort. It was quite overgrown in places.

  2. We opted to retrace our steps, and take a recognised path towards Easton Hollow taking an unrecognised NE detour up to the peak of Winkelbury Hill. The grasses were very tall and we couldn’t see a clear path towards the fort, so we headed towards the other side of the fence to get there. Again, not a recognised path on my map.

  3. Our route back towards Cranborne Droves Way was again, not on a marked path.

As usual, I have my walking buddy to thank for the off piste action, on what is otherwise quite a straight forward and enjoyable walk. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
