FT817 deaf on 50MHz

My ft817 (not ND) is deaf on 50MHz. A friend of mine tried everything to solve the problem but no luck. Relais and 6m preamplifier works. Any sugestions?

the only thing I can suggest is a microprocessor reset, the procedure is on page 76 in the handbook. Since this will clear the memories, as a first step I would go into the third (hidden) menu and see if somehow the receiver gain on 6m has got itself set very low. That will be menu number 04 (55.05) and it should probably read somewhere around 60 to 70, but I would try increasing it until the background noise becomes audible in a quiet location.

I have just thought: there is a relay that activates either the front or the rear antenna socket. It may be worth trying the one that you don’t usually use in case of a dirty contact. That is second menu number 07. If there is a difference, try rapidly cycling between the two to see if this will clean the contact. Do it anyway - it cannot hurt!

Good luck!

Thank you for your answer. Reset, hidden menus, relais. That was all checked first

You don’t mention what mode you are using.
I was trying FT8 on 6m with my FT817 and getting very little power out, and poor sensitivity on receive. It turned out my first contact had been using an audio frequency well above 2,000 Hz, and the band-skirt of the audio filter of the radio was cutting off the signal.
I moved back to an audio frequency of close to 1,000 Hz and all was well.

No, I am not using ft8.

I did’t mention but power output is ok. Problem is with receiver

Hi Damir,

Have you checked that the SQL/RF control is not set for RF Gain and is set too low (i.e. min)?

Assuming this radio may have a fault, you may want to take a look at the 455KHz filters, as they are known to be a problem, resulting in the radio being deaf.

Not the same radio I know, but this image/post shows what they may look like on the 817: The Shack - Yaesu Ft-857 dropped into The Shack deaf as a… | Facebook

You can get spares here: Pack of 3 ceramic filters LT455H LT455E LT455G for Yaesu FT-817 - TechnoFix UK

Albeit I appreciate you will likely want to source them locally.

Possibly worth reading this post too: FT818 deaf after period of disuse - Equipment / Radios & Power - SOTA Reflector

Good luck :crossed_fingers::+1:

Can you transmit on 50 MHz?

Other bands ok on TX and RX?

Yes, other bands are ok on tx and rx. 50MHz tx is also ok

All menus were checked. Relais were also checked.

These are two relais for 50MHz preamplifier
