Folding@home and Covid-19

It appears to be showing as 195,871 in the team stats Rob.

Hi Rob,

Sorry to hear you’re having problems hope you have more luck today.

I’m hardly one to advise, but I have noticed it can take a long time to recover from “glitches” - I had an issue overnight due (I think) to my VPN service going AWOL, and it took several hours after reset to resume folding. If you’re still having problems may be some clue as to what’s going on in the log file in the Advanced Controls when you try to start up again ?

Sorry to hear you are having problems Rob. I don’t have any suggestions other than that there is a very active forum supporting FAH at https://foldingforum.org and I am sure you’d get some help there from the experts. They will want to see the log, which can be copied and pasted from the Advance Control application. If the logs are no longer visible in the app, they are retained for at least a week in the FAH application data folder.

Hope you can get it sorted out!

Sorry to hear about your crash, Rob. I hope you can get things back to normal.

I’ve just joined the team using an old Intel I5 which was gathering dust. I’m planning on leaving it in the garage where its much cooler. Will the programme run indefinitely without needing any input from me?
Thanks
Roger

More or less, Roger. It would be worth checking on it from time to time, as sometimes odd network problems can result in the client giving up. If it’s easier you can check progress by proxy by noting that your score keeps increasing on the SOTA team page. Do remember to get and install your passkey before you lock the garage!

Thanks John, I’ve installed the passkey and will check the team page and computer from time to time. Hope you’re keeping well.

Many thanks Marc.
I may try to load F@H again today and if it does not accept G0HRT I will try afresh as G0HRT/P

Many thanks John.
I will certainly try this forum group.

Hurrah! I have managed to reload F@H after a complete systems crash and it is now running correctly again. I could not resrtart the original software or data files (presumably corrupted) deleted client programme using microsoft programme deletions and downloaded/reload without success? Could not delete datafiles the same way and so decided nothing to lose but to hard delete data files and shut down firewall. F@H then reloaded and ran. I re-entered previously entered name (callsign), Team name and password as before and it let me in. I expected that the deleted data file carried my earlier score and would be lost, but NO. Still there. So off we go again.
Anyone else in same position I can chat about restoring on radiog0hrt@gmail.com

p.s. I should have mentioned that I turned off my two firewalls temporarily to do this reset and restored Kapersky Total Security firewall back in place afterwards. Windows firewall seems to cause problems?

It does now appear from the team stats that you are acquiring credits. As a certain brand purports, “Every Little Helps”. So a great recovery. For some reason I have had the newstyle BSD 3 times today but the folding process has still continued

Thanks Jim
I can’t see your score for dust.

Well Rob this application is quite amazingly robust and has kept churning away processing WUs all day despite the fact that I have been fighting a registry corruption that has taken almost all day to resolve. I thought it was just me till I googled it to find it happens to many others. Essentially everything works fine with the exception of any MS Office apps where Windows refuses to find them no matter where or how you try. All my many scans and repairs from 4 different security tools make no difference. Uninstall fails and even an trying to reinstall fails. Office repair fails as does Windows repair. Eventually a downloaded MS support and recovery assistant clears the corruption taking well over half an hour to do so and allows an Office reinstall. So although I have done nothing else all day but fight this issue, folding@home has not even hiccuped despite multiple reboots and has continued to acquire credits at a rate beyond my expectations.

Sometimes I hate computers but I cannot live without them .

No real loss then

The full fat version of Office is forced onto my work laptop. I never use it, I have LibreOffice and use that mainly and only use real Office to check it can read the files from LibreOffice.

I have tried some of the Office alternatives but have not found them able to do all of the things I want to. That maybe because, I have failed to find those things but as a MS apps beta user since Windows 2 (yes 2, that is a long time ago) I am so familiar with them that learning something else is a chore. As a beta tester for Windows 3 that was quite an amazing step forward. Ah! the old days of personal computers were fun. For my first MS purchase for the office we got 2 with real 7" floppy’s.
Jim

I use Open Office on Windows and Libre Office (a fork) on Linux. Both will save as doc and will read docx (which my version of MS Office will not!). I can switch between all three with little difficulty and find the only real problem being graphs which seem to work best on Excel.

I’m happy to admit I’m not a power user of Word or Excel so the free alternatives may lack some power features. But for what I need, LibreOffice does the job. Moreover, I can run it on Windows and Linux and it’s the same. It does what I need for no cost. If I like it enough I can donate some cash to help the writers.

But most importantly, it doesn’t have that stupid Ribbon UI. Gaaaah, horrible non-intuitive time and space wasting rubbish.

It was mainly the macro facilities I enjoyed - they are amazing. Many may not believe it but is is possible in Excel to develop a fully controlled form with field validation such that a link could be emailed to many people in a business function world wide for them to fill in the fields then submit and that response would come back to a single data base that at the time was in Brussels to be included.

Not sure if others have found this facility for printing certificates on WU completed. Look for and click on the WUs that are underlined.

There is also one for our Summits On The Air team https://apps.foldingathome.org/awards?team=265845&type=wus and for a small team like us what is quite remarkable is that we have today broken through into the top 4000 teams of 253989 teams in such a short time. I am not a collector of certificates other than those I have needed for education, licensing, travel or medical reasons.
