Joe English Hill is a sparsely wooded summit which overlooks a small valley and Joe English Pond. Today the summit was blanketed in 4 inches (10 CM) of powdery snow. There’s a fire pit with several field stone benches around it. There is also an area where there are 2 wooden Adirondack Chairs by what appears to be a fireplace. I would have never found the chairs if it wasn’t for my chat with Mary while I was on the summit @N1RKO I’ve been told that this area is used for Hawk observation.
Today I used an HT and a twin lead JPole on VHF. I ran the MTR4B @ 5 Watts into a SOTABeams Linked Dipole on HF.
I activated Joe English Hill this past summer on a layover in Manchester! I remember the wood benchs and fire-pit very nice memory. Very nice AZ to play SOTA.
Hi Erik,
Hiking in on Joe English brought back some really nice memories here as well. I used to work at the Tracking Station and haven’t been out that way since the mid 90’s. If I can talk my grandson into doing a hike with me I may try to lug some wood in and cook some hot dogs. He’s 17 and used to hike with me all the time. That is until he got his wheels.

Hi Fraser,
Nice to hear from you, it’s been a while.
This summit is pretty nice but I’m sure it doesn’t compare to the peaks in EU. Although fresh powder with little to no wind on a sunny brisk day is kind of hard to beat.
New Hampshire like many other places is just filled with many great out of the way hikes. I think that’s what I enjoy most about activating summits. You just never know what your going to get until you get there.
