(Fear of) Invalid activation F/AB-204, Pointe de la Masse

Edit: Thanks for all the support. I have reinstated the activation.

Unfortunately my activation of Pointe de la Masse today was performed from just outside the activation zone. This is particularly frustrating as the cabin lift station is within the activation zone. I accidentally walked out of the activation zone to avoid inconveniencing other people on the summit. If I had sat comfortably on the viewing platform, I would have been within the activation zone!

It’s a lovely summit. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was a lovely ski back to the valley. It is only upon examining my photographs that I have realised my error. I have deleted my activation.

Thank you to the 15 stations who kindly called in. I will contact each individually when I return home.

How frustrating for you Kevin. What bad luck. 73

Only you will know for sure Kevin, however the AZ looks huge on this picture from the AZ estimator.

Thanks Fraser,
By that definition I was well within the activation zone. Google earth tells me that I was at 2,772m which is 32m below the summit at 2,804m.

It didn’t look like more than 25m below the summit when I was there. I would love some confirmation that would allow the chasers to keep their points.

Kevin:

I’ve just had this happen recently as well. I think the AZ estimator tool Fraser posted is likely the most accurate data out there. Google info is highly suspect in general, let alone mapping accuracy.

@F6HHK, Bruno, please could you advise what I should use as the definitive mapping for this summit to confirm if I was in the activation zone?

Thank you,
Kevin

Thank you Fraser,
On the basis of the activation zone plot I have reinstated my activation until I receive further information. This feels right from my assessment on the ground.

Cheers,
Kevin

Gerald, @MW0WML has kindly provided assistance with details from the IGN mapping and my activation point was within the activation zone.

Google earth was derived from Shuttle scan data, and is up to 10m different from even Google maps, government data and almost any other data. It draws pretty pictures but for serious purposes it is not to be trusted.

SOTA is a serious purpose.

Excellent! Peace and order restored, and everyone gets to keep their points. :slightly_smiling_face:

@GW0PLP I have popped my radio in my pocket and am heading back up Pointe de la Masse to give it a second chance for any chasers that have concerns.

Oh, shame we didn’t make a QSO Don. Thanks for listening. There has been plenty of QSB around, but I’ve made a few contacts in GM and EI on 15m and 10m. I’ll put a report on when I get back.

I believe that I was in the AZ but I have gone back to the absolute summit to give you another chance if you are unsure. I’m on 14.0625MHz CW for another 5 minutes.

Hi Don,
I have revisited the summit this afternoon. Yesterday’s activation was in the activation zone and was valid in my opinion.
