External Link or Article?

Wise and Honorable List Denizens;

Okay, so I have a humble little web page where I like to post photos and other stuff from my various activations. I’ve been posting external links to each new summit I activate. Recent catastrophes here on the west coast of North America have me thinking about my own mortality, perhaps even more than is healthy.

It occurs to me that I will not be able to sustain this web page forever. I have posted over a hundred links already. So here is the question: Should I be posting a short article with a reference to the web page instead of an actual External Link? I’m not sure if the webmasters of the SOTA database can globally delete dead links at some point in the (hopefully) far distant future.

I don’t want to create a big headache for some hard-working SOTA database manager in the future or leave the group with a bunch of dead links. I’d rather start weeding them out with replacement articles now.

You could add your site to the archive.org and then post a link to its archived version of your site.

I think people would also welcome writing your activation reports here as well. Discourses is pretty good and I bet it’ll look 95% fine with a simple copy and paste from your site the next time you do an activation.

Another alternative is to create a static version of your site and host it somewhere else…like neocities, github pages, qsl.net. Doesn’t have the nice domain but acts as a permanent back up (as permanent as they maintain their system).

I’ve made static versions of other people’s Wordpress sites using wget, but as you’re in control I bet there are plugins or something to do this as well.

Now I’ll be reading your site with a nice cup of tea :teapot: :cat::radio::mount_fuji:

What a terrific resource! Thanks Alex.

I’ve been keeping weather records from a high-end weather station for close to 30 years. I’ve had all kinds of people use this data. Lately it has sadden me to think that this information might expire with me. I really appreciate you taking the time to pass this link along. Thanks again!

I’m still not sure if, when the time comes, the webmasters here at sota.org.uk can globally delete dead links for an entire user.

Anyone can flag a link as broken on the page. We can do it for any user. And I run a dead link script every few months.

Marvelous work, @VK3ARR , thank you for all your efforts. Based on the suggestion above, perhaps you could publish a log of the dead links that have been removed by the script in the past? I can script up a search for Internet Archive versions of the lost links, and get them reposted if they’re available.
