I’ve muted that thread on groups.io and now it needs muting here.

You’re right, Andy, the self-irony also comes across well when muted

And since we are both just outsiders when it comes to KH1 and QRO, we can just have fun with this post without bias.

I do QRP because in my activity (like that of many) I use batteries.
Now I wonder why some QRP fanboys need to defenestrate those who prefer QRO.
I also don’t like it when QROboys make fun of QRP.
I don’t like digimodes but it would NEVER occur to me to speak ill of them.
I wonder, is it so difficult to enjoy without criticizing or mocking?

Hello Takeo-san,

I agree with you, each of us has developed preferences for modes, power levels, antennas etc. even the brand of car we drive.

I wonder whether some buyers feel the need to defend their decisions and rather than just stating that they like the brand they bought, they want to criticise someone else for buying a different brand.

Humans are odd creatures, some are very competitive.

Most of us do it a lot (without even realizing it) but don’t always resort to mocking others who made a different choice. Psychologists call it rationalization when we justify our decision by emphasizing the good things and ignoring the negative things about the choice, and we do vice versa about the option(s) we didn’t choose. Apparently, it reduces post-decision anxiety and makes us feel better.

It gets nasty when we huddle in like-minded in-groups (on social media, at political rallies, etc) and think our choice/view/leader/nation state/etc is great and the other group has no redeeming qualities, deeds, etc - sometimes even demonizing them. We get trapped in a mindset.

Few of us have critical thinking skills – it’s a pity they’re not taught in schools. I think they would improve the life chances of many.

I too enjoy low-power portable ops (even well before SOTA existed) – it’s what got me back into amateur radio after a two-decades break – but it’s also good there are many other facets of the hobby that others enjoy.
