This was another 20m day for me. I wanted to make two summits in a day so pinned Slievecorragh EI/IE-039 and Spinans Hill EI/IE-040, both meant to be easy 4 pointers (I haven’t been to Spinans Hill before though).
I’ve started from Slievecorragh EI/IE-039, happily set up my dipole (this time I had a mast extension with me, that gave me 3m feed point height) on a very rocky top of the summit . Turning on the radio and to my dismay … I am unable to find any workable SWR across any of HF bands. After almost an hour messing around with dipole’s length, cable checks etc … I found myself in the same position - SWR fail all over!
To say I was pretty much frustrated would be an understatement.
After intensive head scratching I’ve recalled something about ground quality and tentatively decided to move the dipole few meters away from that rocky top to regular soil. Without expecting too much and still thinking of a HW failure somewhere SWR came back to normal straight away regardless
Was this a coincidence or really a ground property thing? At that stage I’ve lowered my mast to 2m and started to call.
After 2-3 CQs ReverseBeacon has picked me up and chasers started to come up. Not many, just 9 CW QSOs, but still good enough. Then moved to SSB, spotted myself and another 16 in the log.
I was in a rush to get in to my second summit, but still hooked on my 2m Yagi and without self-spotting quickly run through FM/SSB/CW - nothing at all, although GB3NGI on 144.482 was coming at S7 on S-meter. So then I’ve wrapped up quickly and moved on.
Unfortunately, another summit appeared to be inaccessible from the side I was hoping to get through. With all the possible warnings and palleted out entrance the gate looked more like a Looney Tunes scene.
Quite a bit disappointed, I drove around the hill and found another entry. There was a new, but closed gate, and a working farm beside it.
Having to be back home on a set time I didn’t dare to venture inside not to find myself in trouble. So opted for quiet retreat back home
Still a brilliant day out and something extra to think about!
