EG61GURU special activation

As you may remember, our friend Guru EA2IF passed away on March 11th 2022.

Since then, a number of his ham friends did a tribute to his memory by carrying out activations running a Special callsign.

This year we’ve got from the telecommunications authorities the following special callsign that we’ll use:

EG61GURU

  • Activation: this callsign will be used to do several activation during March 2026 from summits within mainland EA.
When activating we’ll always add the suffix /P

  • Chasing: as perhaps there are other activators who would like to have a QSO with us, we’ll be using it casually to chase from home.
When chasing we will not add the suffix /P, therefore we are at home.

There will be no paper QSL, but all the QSO will be uploaded to the Sota Database and any activation will also be listed in the event web page.

Hear you from the summits. Thanks for participating in these friendship waves.
Don’t get mad about the extrange callsign if you get this call.

On Friday I was on my local summit (W2/GC-020). This is where I began my SOTA journey. When I saw EG61GURU/P being spotted on 14 MHz it reminded me that it was from this same place on 11 March in a different year that I enjoyed my first SOTA contact with our friend Guru, EA2IF.

In subsequent meetings from different summits or from my home station, he would sometimes say “Thanks for coming to 15 meters” when conditions were right for a trans-Atlantic SOTA contact. … So today, I can say to my friend Javier “Thanks for coming to 15 Meters for our s2s” in tribute to EA2IF.

Stay well & 73!

Today, I felt a surge of nostalgia when I heard that callsign from my summit.

I will always remember all the good qsos, emails and pictures exchanged that I had with Guru.

Thanks to the EA community (and possibly other associations) for that special event.

Hi all,

Yesterday (30/03/2026) worked Santi @EA3O/P on EA3/BC-041
Here the spot’s for the activation:

But the log say EG61GURU ?

Do I need to change the call in my log?

You log the callsign you worked…

Of course if you want to change it later, you can do that and no-one will notice or care. (In the politest possible way).

Or you write in the notes something about GURU activation.

Hello again.

I got in contact with Santi and he confirmed that operated as EA3O.

The trouble was the log upload as he had inadvertently EG61GURU in his app from a past activation.

He will correct the log to revert to his EA3O callsign
