How the hell does my XYL put up with me? She led me up SS-282 today in Scottish Dreke, which turned to rain as we hit the col between the two wee hills. I set up the dipole in the pouring rain there - it is well within the AZ and I always get out better with the inverted vee above a wire fence.
I bailed out in the pouring rain after 10 QSOs and a single CQ then without callers and we packed up. Sorry had to dissapoint others who may have called on SSB or on 30m and 40m which escaped my attention due to WX. Worried about a drowned KX2 and a drowned XYL Judy and doggy Treacle.
Hopefully tomorrow we’ll do more on the two other Pentland Hills we have lined up SS-195 (AM) and SS-177 (PM) - park ups located an hours drive away from where we are staying for a few days at the the Tushielaw Inn (Well used country Inn by SOTA activators located “in the middle of nowhere”).
Some pics en-route from Badingsgill Sawmill parking place, and one of Judy trying to shelter the shivering Treacle from the rain while I was packing away the dipole after my smash and grab 5 minute activation. You can just see the dog’s bum so doesn’t qualify for the “Dogs on Summits” thread!
Many thanks to Victor GI4ONL for alerting my activity after I texted him. The 10 callers were there in a flash…
Well done on yet another GM/SS summit. I think that you need to edit your post and being worried about being drowned, you maybe need to promote Judy to first place and Treacle to second with the KX2 third - hi hi!
It was so wet this afternoon, about 13miles from GM/SS-282, that my first conclusion was that David G0EVV was in the area… he always drags a downpour along with when he visits GM. Then I saw the spot for Phil and thought well he’ll be a bit damp now. I’ve never been there when the ground has not been very soft and boggy, even after a dry spell so I can imagine the squishing and sploshing today.
Being a pedant, can I inquire where this new word originated? The Scottish adjective for dull, grey wet weather is driech which I realise is difficult for many to pronounce, resulting in a K sound rather than a ch as in och… I just can’t see how it evolved to dreke. I do realise that if the weather is mochie or a smirr perhaps even a haar you might describe it as driech. Any how I just hope you were not drookit.
Jim
I like being in my “natural environment”! Remember:
If it ain’t rainin it ain’t trainin.
Skin’s wata pruf, clothes dry.
857’s are known do recover from a drownnin.
ps, It sometimes it snows instead and (in my experience) the rain is not unique to GM.
Off to do Knott in LD on Sat might be dry? Will pack suncream, hand gell and waterproofs!
'twas good to work Phil handy to handy today. He was on a hill, I was in the back bedroom New battery in the VX-170 working fine. And it was a complete
Looking to bag Phil tomorrow on his way home via Broad Law GM/SS-029. That will be a complete. Then Andrew G(M)4VFL will be on Cairnsmore of Carsphairn GM/SS-038 on 13cms. That will be a complete and a 13cms complete too! Jack will be on Earls Seat GM/SS-126 on 13cms which be another complete but not a 13cms complete. 3 possible completes followed by some 17m fun assuming I manage not to fragmatise all the radios on this outing.
@g0evv Hey David, I just looked, Knott is line of sight to 33 GM SOTA summits including where I think I will be! You don’t fancy popping up tomorrow Friday for 1130Z with a 2m or 70cms handy or any 23/13cms gear you can snaffle ?
