I challenge myself to chase Richard G4TGJ on his activations and I try to do summit to summit QSOs if I can.
Richard alerted for Pendle Hill G/SP-005 this morning, so I thought I’d chase him from a small summit. The weather forecast that I saw suggested gusty winds and cold temperatures. I opted to activate Easington Fell as the drive is around 35 minutes from home and the summit has a large activation zone which can easily accommodate even the largest antenna.
At the last minute before leaving the house, I decided to grab my Kanga Products Rooster 40m transceiver. I’d built the kit quite some time ago but never tried it.
I got to the summit (G/SP-012) and set up my gear, it was at that point that I realised that the Rooster doesn’t have a built in keyer. I’d only taken paddle keys with me. I had to use my Palm Pico as a straight key.
I’m not so good with a proper straight key, so using a paddle key wasn’t exactly ideal.
Apologies for the QLF on 40m and thanks to the 9 stations who managed to work out what I was attempting to send!
I managed to work G4TGJ/P on G/SP-005 on both 30m and 20m using my MTR.
The weather was far nicer than the forecast suggested, at times the wind was noticeable by it’s absence.
What a difference a day makes, it was absolutely freezing on Great Coum yesterday!
