EA8/TF-010, Roque del Conde curtailed activation

Hi,

I enjoyed a rather excellent activation this morning on EA8/TF-010 (Roque del Conde) on 10 metres. Thanks to all of the chasers and to Manuel (EA2DT) for the SPOT. I had set an alert for 11:00 hours but we arrived early and on scanning the band managed a S-2-S with EA1IEH (Eloy) who was on EA1/SO-003.

Manuel heard the S-2-S and requested I go up 5KHz and so the ‘contest’ started. Very good SSB contact across northern Europe but sadly no transatlantic QSOs today. Thanks to all of the many chasers, some had to persevere and thanks for your patience and indulgence. Extra special to gather a winter bonus in shorts and a t-shirt on my final day on Tenerife!

I had also alerted that I would use 20 metres but we found time was running out; we had to get back to the hotel, then car hire, then to the airport. We had also decided to traverse the peak which proved to be a fine day out, but the start of the northern path was difficult to find and then quite awkward to follow. A looming deadline to add to the stress. The quote “Swiss time was running out!” played loudly in my head - who was it?

However, the descent was swift after the somewhat ropey start; the hotel, car hire and airport were smooth, streamlined and trouble free.

So, I now find I have had time to log the QSOs while sitting at the airport, as our flight has been delayed!!!

Thanks again and I will try to do better in future.

The album was recorded Dec 6th-21st 1971. So it’s 53 years old now to the day almost! I have an original on vinyl, a CD copy and a 25th anniversary CD copy (it has the original mix and a remixed/remastered bonus CD). I should check if there is a 50th anniversary issue available.

I was pleased to see there is a bar to remember Claude Nobs, organiser of the Montreaux Jazz Festival from its inception at Geneva Airport. Claude had befriended the band and invited them to the casino to record an album during its winter closure in 1971. But “some stupid” fan of Frank Zappa let off a flare and “burnt the place to the ground”. Claude is the “Funky Claude was running in and out” mentioned in the song and he died from a skiing accident nearly 12 years back.

Nice hill that. I also had 10m fun up there, whilst dodging paragliders.
