EA8/TF-001 - planning January 2026

Dear SOTA friends,

I will be in Tenerife from January 11th to 24th and plan to activate a total of five mountains. Which mountains I will activate is still undecided. I would like to combine the activation with a nice hike with my wife. My equipment consists of a KX2 and an MP-1 antenna. I will primarily be operating in CW.

One date is already set, however: I have obtained permission to climb Mount Teide. The time window is January 14th between 13:00 and 15:00 local time (UTC).

I will be operating on 145.500 MHz in FM mode and hope to reach many radio enthusiasts from EA8. If time and weather permit, I will also try operating on shortwave.

I hope that access to Mount Teide will be open and that the weather will allow for the activity.

Mi español debería ser suficiente para un QSO corto. Disculpen las molestias y espero poder hablar con ustedes.

Maybe @OE5JFE Joe will come along and offer advice. He did a similar style activation a couple of years ago.

Hello,

As it looks like that you speak Spanish you can share your activation plans on the local repeater.

Or contact Raoul EA8AMT by email. He helped a lot in making Advertisement for my Activity. But make sure that you have a good plan on your timeing.

You should make plenty of contacts on 2m FM 145.500.

And of course at that time it is likely that there is snow on the summit and roads and/or the cable car is not operating.

You can find the link to the status page on the SOTA summits and sotl.as page for Teide.

Hi Joe,

thanks so much for your tips!

Yes, I hope the weather is good that day and that I can actually get up the mountain. I’ll definitely get in touch with Raoul in the next few days.

All the best and Merry Christmas!

No worries.

And as you activate on CW HF make sure to give 10m and 15m a good try. North and south America will likely be in your log :crossed_fingers:

Don’t forget to spot yourself or use alerts with RBNhole spoting.

It has snowed on Mount Teide these last few days.

My recent trip to Tenerife was amazing. Here is a list of the summits I activated. Of these EA8/TF-009 was the most magical and very straightforward. If you are taking HF note that I didn’t use the 30m/40m segments of my 20m/30m/40m dipole. You would be better off taking support for 10m/12m/15m/17m or some combination instead. Nothing heard on 30m or 40m.

Regards, Mark.

I also saw snow fairly low down as I departed, following storm Amelia’s presence.

Dear friends,

I have received valuable information from Raúl (EA8AMT). He is very helpful – thank you for that! The situation has changed with the onset of winter and Storm Emilia. Many roads are currently impassable by car and access to the mountains in Teide National Park is heavily restricted. I found further information on the website https://www.tenerifeon.es/.

All in all, it is more difficult than I thought a few weeks ago.

I will have to assess the situation on site.

Of course, I will announce my activities in advance and also spot them.

I hope to hear from as many of you as possible.
