EA8/DL4ABO/p - Gran Canaria

Hello dear radio friends!

I will be on the island of Gran Canaria from March 11th to 25th and will activate at least two summits. On the list are Pico de Las Nieves (EA8/GC-001) and Roque Nublo (EA8/GC-002). Focus will be 17m CW. Will spot myself. I hope for lots of QSOs…

Hi Michael,

I guess you are aware that the activation zone for Roque Nublo requires rock climing skills in UIAA Grade 5 - multipitch sportclimbing route.

GC-002 haste keine Chance, außer Du kann Klettern. Sonst kommt dort keiner hoch!

Hallo ihr zwei!

Vielen Dank für den Hinweis! Da hätte ich wohl vorab besser recherchieren müssen.

Hallo Michael,

check my blog reports on Gran Canaria, links are on each summits’ page for those summits that I activated in 2018. I’m sure you will find some easier ones than Roque Nublo.

Wishing you a good time over there, I will be on Gran Canaria myself in the month of May.

Hi Micheal,
Here are some recommendations of some of the bigger summits in GC that are quite accessible:

EA8/GC-005 Morro de la Cruz Granda
EA8/GC-006 Tamadaba
EA8/GC-003 Moriscos

Lots of good options in GC. Have a great trip.

Those two are delightful summits and straightforward walks. The views from both summits are gorgeous. Easy walking, lots of QSOs then back to the hotel to relax by the pool with a very cold beer. :beers: :sun_with_face: :swimming_man:

We are also going to GC march 10, for a week. So all tips are welcome.

Thanks.

Also, to access the base of Roque Nublo EA8/GC-002 you must request authorization. Restricted area for people.

Hi Michael @DL4ABO ,

If you fancy a longer walk, then EA8/GC-011 from the GC-500 road parking to the NW of La Playa del Cura is really scenic. It’s a long walk, but you pass through lots of interesting areas.
If you park really early in the morning (while it is dark), then you might hear some Cory’s Shearwater’s, which sound really spooky  ( Cory’s shearwater - Wikipedia) This is the sound: call of CORY’S SHEARWATER

Have fun & 73,
Simon

To me, EA8/GC-011 was probably the nicest summit I visited in Gran Canaria.
But I choose a very short way, which is shown at the SOTLAS page.

Not far away, at 27.89702,-15.69409 there is also a nice lookout point.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see many animals, only a rabbit was crossing the path when I was walking back.

Have fun and 73, Stephan

Hello everyone! I am happy about the numerous tips and recommendations. Thank you very much for that! I’m excited about the SOTA community. We arrived on the island yesterday afternoon. I’m currently sitting on the terrace with my wife and we’re looking at your posts. We are planning the next few days. I’ll keep you updated… vy 73 from Michael EA8/DL4ABO

Hello dear radio friends!

Today I just activated a small summit to test my equipment. I was on the Montana de Arucas (EA8/GC026). Unfortunately I had a huge amount of interference on the 17m band - S8 to S9+. Unfortunately, I was only able to work four stations there. I feel sorry for the radio friends who called me in vain. It was not possible for me to copy anything. After changing to 10m things went better. Tomorrow I want to go to the Moriscos (EA8/GC-003). I will try the 10m band and the 12m band.
