Dumb question, what does “spotcheck CALLSIGN” actually do?
Nothing. You need to put an actual callsign in as an argument after the comand. The sota api will return output if data is present. You also have to use the word “spotcheck” before the query or the bot doesn’t know what to do. The “your callsign” is just a place holder for the sake of me trying to show how to use, think of it as your query vs YOUR OWN callsign. You can query any call.
I think Andy understands that you replace CALLSIGN with an actual callsign. But what does spotcheck actually do? What is the status of a callsign? What spot details? Post an example.
The clue is in the name. It returns details of the spot if present. Give it a go. ![]()
It would be easier for you to post an example than for me to work out how to send a packet. Then I’ll know if it will be worth my while.
It doesn’t sound like it’s for you. So maybe dont worry about it.
Gave it a try and it replied. Kinda cool.
I think the confusion is because it feels like you reinvent the wheel
See
https://www.sotaspots.co.uk/
with the /spots command. All and much more available…
And it is even more intuitive as you can send the APRS measage to callsign: SOTA

Yes I’m familiar with sota2aprs too. I’m not looking to provide some innovative unique asset to the community here. This is just something I was fiddling with in a bid to learn something.
Rarely do I bother to engage with any community these days online as it seems folk only have criticism, ignorance or general “I know better” attitude.
There is exactly one person here who’s just tried it and been positive.

You should rightly be proud of this. It summs up the hobby as being self taught through experinentation / education. Why should it matter if others have done something similar. It gives everyone an alternative shoulf they wish to try it.
Good on you.
Just ignore it. Share your experiments it inspires others to have a go!
If people ask for an explanation or an example of what the program/service does and you reply with glib/smart-ass answers rather than actual useful answers then that could explain the difficulties with engagement you have found.
All the info is in the OP. If you don’t want to try, that’s on you. It’s not glib or smart-ass to feel frustrated when people don’t bother to read or attempt to understand things before posting silly questions.
Ive improved (perhaps) the OP based on your needs.
