I understand that, John, and to be honest I am uncomfortable about it, but as Simon said, the current summit list is so bad…he says some summits are less than P100, I have heard that some would not make P50. We asked for a revision of the summit list years ago and were refused, we had to do it ourselves. What did we find?

Of the 951 listed summits only 158 were in accordance with our prominence rule. How could we let that stand? On the other hand, 61 new summits that had been missed were found.

It is not very nature-friendly, but that’s how it goes…

The association has been like that for more than 10 years, so I doubt that 1 month more would have changed anything.

I really hope the real motivation was to reduce the collateral damage by handling the crisis communication right.

I’m heading home on Saturday anyway as there are now worries about a second Coronavirus wave here in DE/OE; I don’t want to get quarantined when I get back.

Ja das ist wirklich blöd , und mach so ein schönes Programm kaputt, und erzeugt Frust, ich wil
nicht 300km fahren um mal Spass am Bergfunke zu haben, jedes Land hat halt andere geformte Berge

It’s really a shame.

SOTA OK is definitely going not to be for walkers who are wanting a good relax from traffic jungle around.

But rules are not about being smart, adaptable, effective and nature friendly. In fact, they must throw obstacles in player’s way. So, install them and let us move along…

Indeed, the choice of a prominence figure of 150m originally by John G3WGV when creating SOTA was to ensure that each summit represented a distinct entity with a descent and an ascent if walking between them. So SOTA OK is basically the only Association left that allows an almost level stroll to get you double digit points. That’s not really fair, is it, for someone from VK, or W, or ZS, who might struggle to visit OK and benefit from the same scenario?

Hi everyone.
I like SOTA very much but this is a pitty. I know rules are rules…There aren’t a lot of people here who can go over 150km by car to some activation every week. I’m very curious how many peaks will remain in OK/KR region because I live here  . Anyway I hope that is final solution for next years.

I may have the database query wrong, but I read it as 9 remaining of the existing summits, and 1 new summit (KR-001, 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 19, 26, 32 and new one is KR-082 (Čáp - 50.5746,16.1241) ).

I sympathise with your 150km driving problem. I have to drive 4 hours to get anywhere near a 10 pointer and 3 hours for an 8 pointer. Curse of living this side of VK3.

Thanks a lot for your answer. So when I activate near summits in my surroudings I will have to acivate GMA peaks and why because I love portables in the nature. I’m a little sad but it were beautiful years with a lot of summit near my house. So happy activations the peaks of remaining in the future.

The UK summit definition choice was to use an existing summit list based on the work of Alan Dawson and described in his book The Relative Hills of Britain. This was done with his explicit agreement as part of the process of setting up SOTA. It was Alan who came up with the idea of this specific prominence measure (it’s explained in the book). John’s original draft for SOTA did not have a detailed summit definition; it mentioned hill tops over 2,000 ft.

As a fan of the SOTA program and regular activator, I can understand both sides of the discussion. While I see that the rules are as they are and the OK summit list needs to be updated, I really feel with the hams from OK - maybe even more as I’m living in the DM area…

And as David OK4KOP stated “I visited the peaks and places I would probably never otherwise visit”: Why not continue with that? The “deleted” summits will still be in the database, we have the infrastructure (alerts, spots etc) so we can go ahead, visit these peaks and operate portable as before.

Only difference is that one gets 0 points for the activation (and the chasers as well), so maybe this will only be an option for the not-so-competetive SOTA members… And in the light of fairness, an activation from an inactive summit should clearly be marked as that in any alert/spot.

If SOTA is not inherently a competitive activity - why not?

Karel

Because no one has come up with a fundamentally sound reason why OK deserves to be special.

It is not only about OK. It is about the art of thinking in broader way.

What about SOTA carbon footprint? Am I old to think this way?

Karel

Well, summits aren’t usually removed with no notice. I’m not likely to go to OK, but I plan expeditions weeks in advance and book accomodation months in advance. If I were going to OK next week I would have no idea which of my planned activations would be valid. I wouldn’t be happy.

The practice seems to be rather different when the summits are closer to home. I can cite at least two threads on this reflector in which an MT member has openly stated that the pending removal of an invalid summit would not take effect before he had had a chance to bag it himself. Yes, it was a little tongue-in-cheek, but it happened nonetheless. Other G* summits have been removed with a long grace period and people have been encouraged to get them while they can.

Rules are rules for sure, but there seem to be double standards in how they are applied.

So we only include summits that can be reached by public transport? Or do we have to store the QTH of all participants and only include those within a certain radius of them? Do we have to ban all the American activators who travel to summits in their gas-guzzling monster trucks?

Broaden the thinking by all means, but spare a thought for the poor folks that actually have to implement your schemes.

Hello,

it is over with SOTA for me. I live in central OK, and here are only smallest summits. I do not have many time for this hobby, but i love go to nature with radios, and loves hills. Travel to distand mountains is possible for me only a few times per year. I haven’t really started SOTA yet and it’s over. I am very sad. I looked on WWFF and it is maybe solution for me.
