Curtailed activation today, Katsantoni (SV/ST-060),

Apologies for the curtailed activation of Katsantoni (SV/ST-060) today. Despite a poor forecast it was bright this morning in Karpenisi so we decided to head up the hill. On the ascent I could hear Zeus casting bolts of lightening well to the north; not on Mount Olympus but far enough away to give the peak a try. I must have displeased the gods as Zeus had other ideas and shortly after calling CQ the sky darkened and the thunder and lightening came my way. Static flooded the frequency and I impressed myself just how quickly I packed the 20/40 trapped EFHW and fled from the summit.

However, Zeus had not finished with me as shortly thereafter the heavens opened and I got drenched despite the trees. The only upsides were a warm and very wet 19 degrees centigrade when I got back to the car and the road had not been washed away!

Thanks to Stavros (SV2RUJ) for excellent approach details.

Apologies again and I will try to do better in future.

Glad you got down OK! Lightning is one of the most terrifying things to encounter in the mountains. You suddenly feel awfully small… but enormously exposed at the same time.

Safety first! That way you’ll get to do some more (I see you are on your way to the 10th MG! Impressive Herd!) and we’ll be able to enjoy many more Chaser / S2S points with you!

Thanks Gerald, you seem to have enjoyed better weather on Corfu!

An approaching electric storm makes you realise how much metal we lug up the hills each time; walking poles, yagi, radio, EFHW, feeder, spare antenna and feeder, tent pegs, rucksack frame, multitool, I even have an alloy water bottle! Carbon fibre fishing pole?

It was Monday so the local museum was closed!

Thanks Martin,

Maybe I just need to pay more heed to weather forecasts!
