After this one, another 2 to go to finish my SOTA mission on Lanzarote. Montaña de Timanfaya is not accessible, because of the restrictions of the National Park de Timanfaya.
Once again I was looking for my own access. To find a starting point was not so easy, due to the continued increase in land use (agriculture / housing). After a while, I found a path used by mountainbikers and cross bikes.
The wooden cross was a “God blessing” good support for the antenna! I’ve made 6 QSO’s with 5w. (Icom 705). I’m very grateful to the OM’s who have done an effort to make a QSO with me!
Thank you very much for the S2S we had between our two islands on 23.01.2024 on the 20m band.
I was on EA8/GC-005 and you were on EA8/LA-011, which results to a distance of about 220km! Not too shabby…
Your photos look interesting, I’ve never been to Lanzarote.
I took a picture from EA8/GC-010 towards the activated summit and in this part of Gran Canaria, it looked like that:
Like on most summits on this island, I used a full-size vertical for 20m to 10m, attached to a ground spike with 8 times 2.6m long radials plus a 3m RG-174 coax:
Thanks for the nice reply! Gran Canaria still has to be “explored” by me. No such green vegetation here on Lanzarote. It’s mostly vulcanic soil. For SOTA this year, I only have my home brew resonant End fed for 20m. and my ICOM 705, working QRP (5w.). My next step is the activation of the 2 summits on La Graciosa Island. I’m finished here on Lanzarote Island and has activated all summits (except: Montaña de Timanfaya = forbitten access / nature reserve).
Thanks for the great pictures and info on the summits. I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve added a link to your post on the summit page for EA8/LA-009 so people know that it isn’t accessible.
We’re looking to visit Gran Canaria and maybe Lanzarote in March, so your summit reports have been very useful in our planning, thanks.
