I will be visiting Linz, Austria in late December and am hoping to perform a SOTA activation on either Kürnbergburg (OE/OO-135) or Pfenningberg (OE/OO-129), probably the morning of December 26 or 27.
Because I will be traveling light, I’m only bringing my handheld with me. It looks like perhaps 145.500 and 145.275 (local radio club of Vöcklabruck) might be good simplex frequencies to try, but I’m certainly open to any suggestions or further info anyone might have to offer.
Great to hear you are visiting Linz later this year, I hope you have a wonderful time in Austria.
Several activators and chasers live in this area, so I’m sure you will have no problem activating these two summits on VHF. Just shout out a CQ SOTA call on 145.500 and most likely someone will answer you, of course a spot on SOTAwatch will help. You should also post an alert on SOTAwatch as soon as you know when you will be activating the summit(s).
I activated both summits, but probably @OE5JFE, @OE5YYN and @OE5HKT can give you more info about parking possibilities, walking routes, …
This is great–thank you, Martin, for the reassurance! I’ll definitely post and alert and spot myself once I’m closer to the date. I think that I’ve determined a couple of decent bus route options that will get me close to trailheads for the two locations.
I’m very excited about visiting Linz. I’ve never been to Austria and will be spending my birthday there this year.
Welcome to Linz which is my current QTH.
Don’t miss to visit the local Christmas markets
The two summits nearby Linz will be no problem to activate on 2m FM. Not sure where you got the info of the local radio club of Vöcklabruck from? Any personal links to that group?
But 145.500 FM will yield enough contacts for sure - so start there. The local chasers will be there.
If you are looking for something a bit more thrilling mountaineering wise let me know.
But I guess that will depend on other time constrains of your trip.
26 and 27 December are usually dedicated to meet with family for festival lunch/dinner. But if I am available we can add HF to your band selection.
I live about an hour’s drive from Linz. Like Joe, I have family visiting over the holidays, so I can’t join you. However, I will check in on 2m if you alert your activation.
145.275 FM is the local club’s hang-out frequency, but most activity happens in the evenings, so it might not be helpful during your activation. It should be no problem to get a few QSOs after calling on 145.500 FM. Please note that we use 25 kHz channel spacing for 2m FM in Europe.
Joe and Heinz, thank you both for the additional context!
I do wish I had the time to climb something with a little more in the way of adventure, views (and points) but my schedule is a bit tight. Perhaps next time and in warmer weather.
I believe that the Vöcklabruck info came from a long-time-ago post by OE5REO; that area looked like it was somewhat within range but I bet that I won’t even need to try it.
Your offers are appreciated and I look forward to potentially catching you on the air. I will probably post an alert a couple of days prior but am thinking that sometime on the 26th will be the more likely day.
