Cheated by /P in GMA, FF or similar non SOTA

Guru, you just discovered that there is life outside sota. You are sending sota reference, he is sending his reference. What is the problem?

I like to work portable stations. I am not sota activator or sota chaser. I am not interesting in your sota reference. I am interesting in portable station. You are qrp, low antena, maybe cold, wet, tired and hungy. Only award you have is qso. And I am giving you qso. Why do you give me your sota reference I am not interested in?

There is life outside sota.

Why I am here not been activator or chaser? I like to operate portable, going out, be qrp with low antena, maybe cold, tired, hungry, wet. I even dont have benefit of sota alarm. I even dont use /p. It is not mandatory in Croatia. My only award is qso. An I am here, reading sota reflector because of lot of good things I find here about antenas, rigs, rucksacks, food etc.

Now, I am dissapointed with half of this answers. So I am looking for to clear my membership. And this is my last post here.

Stay well

There’s a problem for me when I’m activating SOTA, I have a big pileup with 15 or 20 chasers calling and my QSO partner starts giving me his name, his QTH, his rig, antenna and the like or when he is sending me unrequested references corresponding to whatever other programmes (not SOTA).

If this happens at the very end, when the whole pileup has dried out and I’m just calling CQ, then there’s no problem at all. So it all depends on the moment. To me, sending all that unrequested info in the middle of a big pile up with dozens of chasers waiting is very unrespectful towards them and a situation I feel uncomfortable with. As simple as this.

I think it is completely legit for a portable operator to repeat /P /P /P when calling in any pile up. They may have limited time, the battery is almost flat, the mast is falling down or the weather is closing in.

even when he breaks through your pileup of 20 chasers just to tell you that he is enjoying the sunshine at the beach?

I think we ought to be talking in terms of general principles rather than individual annoyances.

I suggest reserving /p for SOTA-activators only, or better yet, for EA2IF only. All others have to go away!

Could you explain why such suggestion, please?

Yes Brian, I see it that way too - and when I contrast the problems and annoyances described here with the real problems that unfortunately exist on our planet at the moment (e.g. hunger, physical and psychological torture, political oppression and displacement), then I feel me like in a wrong movie.

From my point of view, the existing regulations have proven themselves very well over the past few years and I therefore see absolutely no reason to change anything.

In my opinion, the newcomers and especially obsessed s2s enthusiasts could perhaps always wait a little while until the first run with Chaser home stations has been completed. In any case, the fashionable /p ā€œblocking fireā€ could be dispensed with, because these are bad practice and do not make particularly sense and fun.

That is the only thing in your post that I don’t agree with, Heinz. I recommend giving S2S calls absolute priority because the other station might have stayed on the summit after his activation waiting for you.

Incidentally, a lot of people probably don’t know this, but when SOTA started there was no S2S award, it was not part of the original thinking. It was the activators themselves that opened up the way for it. It quickly became apparent that S2S contacts were highly prized by the activators, they would drop everything to complete an S2S, and such was the comradeship in those days that chasers would stand by or even when called by the activator would defer the contact saying ā€œyou have an S2S callā€, and stand by if necessary to help it be completed. It happens today, of course, but with so many more chasers it can be missed in the pileup. The MT saw what was happening and made S2S its own, and IMHO, premier award. Better than goat! :grinning:

Sorry, then we don’t see it the same way. I don’t know your practical experience with s2s and my assessment is only based on the slightly more than 5’100 s2s QSOs so far.

Well I would have to defer to you on that, Heinz, SOTA came into existence at the tail end of my climbing and mountaineering time so the onset of old age meant Inever had the chance to build up high scores except as a chaser. You would in any case do SOTA the way that is best for you, which is of course inarguably right.

Really disgusting post, Guru. Find out what ham spirit is.
/P is here far far longer than any SOTA. /p is portable station. Being portable and not being on SOTA is NOT cheating. Full stop.

What it’s amazing and very disappointing to me is realising how many wrong interpretations of a written text can be made be so many people. I have already explained in detail my post, my feeling and I’ve even made precisions on some of the wording used in the original post. Some people have very well understood what I was expressing, but some others seem to insist in keeping the wrong interpretations. I have operated many times /P before being involved in SOTA. Even now, if I had to operate /P not being on a SOTA summit, I’d do it or not, depending on my preferences because it’s not mandatory in EA, but in case I was using /P from a not SOTA location, I can assure you I wouldn’t break through a SOTA pile up sending /P /P /P /P just to draw the activator’s attention and get the SOTA chase while all the other chasers wait.
Also, If I was working /P from a non SOTA location and I was chasing a SOTA activator, I wouldn’t be sending him all the references of DVGE, Castle, Hermitage, Municipality, Volcano, Beach or whatever referenced thing I was activating, unless I was requested by activator. That’s all I was writing about. Do you finally get it?
Thank you.

Oh Guru

Relax!

Just assume that it’s the same here as it is in life.

The readers often don’t bother to read the whole thread, to get all the information, and to think or reflect, or to acquire the other person’s point of view even briefly… but grab any information out, which confirms their opinion.

Then it comes to this: One has no idea but an opinion. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think everything is said and all opinions are exchanged, and who wants has also understood the view of the other.

Right, I just read the initial post which really wound me up and I reacted immediately.
Yeah, let me next time read the whole thread first. On the other side, let also be much more precise already in the first post.

As we are coming up to the hundred posts I think it is time to put this thread to bed.
