This morning while setting up on FL/VO-014, I was approached by a couple who informed me that the summit land was private property and they wanted to know what I was doing there. I was on the large grassy area, away from the comms tower and behind the wooden sculptures, where many others have activated previously, including myself.
Actually, it was a very friendly exchange and after showing them what I was doing, we had a nice conversation and I was welcomed to stay.
They were amazed when I showed them that the summit had been activated 61 times over the years and by people from far and wide. Pressing them a little on whether future activations would be welcomed, I got the impression that they would need more information on the programme. I was asked for my email address so that we could have a better discussion. If and when that happens, I will update with any news. In the meantime, prospective activators should note that you might be challenged.
They maybe just bought the land and know little about it. But if you look online you will find plenty of descriptions on access to the summit, how to drive, where to park and info on the picnic area.
I got a Renault Twingo III up the rough hardcore track without much problem other than it’s wee 900cc I3 engine worked hard in 1st/2nd gear and the electric fan ran for some time to cool the poor thing down in the French afternoon summer heat! It was a hire car so of course I drove it like I’d stolen it
Up until now, it was only closed in winter. Now, it seems to be closed year-round. I believe there is still an access route from the north—but I’m not familiar with it yet.
The road leading to the comms mast and beyond is a public thoroughfare, and the lower section is even a hiking trail. You’ll never run into any trouble if you operate from there.
I should tell you about a certain Misubishi Galant 2.5 V6 I had in California one time. I wouldn’t want to own that one
I don’t recall the sign or gate when I was there. I do remember there were other cars parked at the top when I got there. Seems a long time ago and I really would like to visit The Vosges again.
