After my Erasmus+ duties I will be in Vienna tomorrow. I would like to ask for advice on how to get to Hermannskogel by public transport. Or at least get as close as possible to the top. I will be staying near the Central Station. I will have the whole morning. If anyone would like to join me that would be great!!
The Bus Station at the trailhead is called “Wien Sieveringer Straße/Rohrerwiese”. From there it is rather short and easy hike to the summit. (170 vertical meters and 1.5km distance), according to fellow hams.
The report with the trail on SOTLAS says there is a bit of QRM from the directional links and relays. The reception therefore apparently is much better at the east end of the activation zone near a trail fork.
You can look at Ă–BB (the public transport planer - the link should already be set to Central Station and the destination for tomorrow morning.)
Hope this works out! - will defenitley be listening for you on HF.
73!
I’m not from Vienna or an expert on its public transportation, but I have activated Hermannskogel once.
You can take the bus 38A, to get near the summit. Get off at Cobenzl (a former mansion now an event venue). The 38A departs from Heiligenstadt railway station, the last stop on U-Bahn line U4. The bus ride takes about 15 minutes.
From Cobenzl, it’s about a one-hour hike through the forest with 200m of elevation gain.
If you have limited time taking a taxi to “Rohrerwiese” on Höhenstraße would bring you even closer to the summit. From there it is about a 20 min hike.
@OE5REO Martin,
Thanks for doing the in-depth search on the Viennese public transportation system! I didn’t have the time to do all this.
@OE5LAE Alan,
I also found that “Rohrerwiese” would be the closest possible starting point, but could not find a bus that goes there. Therefore I proposed at taxi as alternative if time is limited.
@EA2GM Javier,
Enjoy your stay in Vienna and good luck with your activation! You did not mention if you will activate on HF or only 2m FM. On shortwave I did not experience any problems with local interference. There are some radio installations on the crowded summit. I would not be surprised if these wreak havoc on VHF.
I found a blog entry of an activation of Hermannskogel with public transportation. It is linked from the entry on SOTLAS. There is a bus to Rohrerwiese! At Cobenzl switch to a bus of line 43A and follow for one stop.
@OE6JBG, @OE5LAE, @OE5EEP, @OE5REO, thank you very much for the valuable information you have provided me.
Right now we are walking through beautiful Vienna.
Tonight, with your information I will plan the activation.
On this trip I have brought only the 20m cw QCX + EFHW.
I appreciate the great information you have provided me and I hope we can do QSO tomorrow!!
What can I say when everything is in your favour, when colleagues have provided you with such detailed information and the weather forecast is good.
A few metres from our apartment there was a U4 stop, after a few minutes I changed to Bus 38A, located right in front of the station exit.
According to the timetable I had to wait a while for the bus that would take me to the Cobenzl car park. I confess that I did not want to wait and took the bus to Wagenwiese.
The walk was a bit longer because of this. Along the way I met many people practising sports. The surroundings were beautiful and very pleasant.
Hermannskogel suddenly showed itself. Even with some fantastic wooden benches where operating the radio would be a pleasure.
I hung the 10m wire of the EFHW antenna from the nearest tree and the QSOs followed one another in a pleasant run. In short, a fantastic activation in the surroundings of Vienna.
My thanks to the Austrian colleagues who gave me such accurate information and to the Erasmus+ Puchòv Team for allowing me to have these adventures.
Hi,
Ham spirit and collaboration made Javier get this summit on air, well done for you, OE guys!
I was very glad to chase you on this one with good signals, thanks!
Very good that you managed to activate 3 new associations for you durig your Central EU trip. Doing that with a single wire, a QRP single band mini rig and no mast in your luggage was perfect!
