Catskill Mountains New York - W2/GC - 106 & 063

Hello Everyone!

This is my first activation report. I’m still very new to the SOTA Reflector, but I wanted to share some snapshots from my two activations this weekend.

Saturday 8/30 - W2/GC - 106

My father in-law Blaine, my fearless trail dog Crimson and myself hiked “Big Indian Mountain” from the Biscuit Brook parking lot.

I really enjoyed this trail, it was 10.6 miles round trip. We hiked up Big Indian and then bush whacked back down Fur Mountain to complete the loop back to the parking lot.

We spent about an hour on the summit and was able to make 20 QSO’s

CW - 18 QSO’s

2m - 2 QSO’s

CW - I used my trust QMX with a 20m vertical whip

2M - Ft60 with a roll up J-pole

Sunday 8/31 - W2/GC - 063

On Sunday, Crimson and I hiked up Windham High Peak. Sadly Blaine could not join us.

This trail was much more mellow than Saturday and a little shorter clocking in at 7.42 round trip. This hike was an out and back though and not a loop.

We spent about an hour on the Summit working CW and 2m with a total of 23 QSO’s

I was super excited to pick up a few S2S contacts as well! Crimson was less excited and took a little nap.

CW - 17 QSO’s w/ 1 S2S

2m - 6 QSO’s w/ 2 S2S

Overall a great weekend, can’t wait to get back out there.

A quick smooch before we packed up to hike back down the Mountain.

Thanks for sharing a nice report and some lovely photographs Nick. That’s a great Father in-law that you have and a great way to spend time together.

I visited the Catkills 30 years ago with my climbing partner. The trip was arranged largely based on my fear of snakes and a promise that there were no snakes in New York state. I felt deeply betrayed when I encountered my first Copperhead. I really enjoyed the Catskills and met some lovely people.

Thanks Kevin. I definitely hit the lottery with a wonderful wife and wonderful in-laws.

Both my Mother and Father in-law are members of the Catskill 3500 club. They hiked all 35 ((now 33)) peak over 3500 feet, I’m slowly working my way there.

My Father in-law has been coming to the Catskills since he was a young boy, so he has tons of great lore to share with me.

Sorry to hear you found a snake, they generally keep to themselves here at least. :joy:

I really enjoy this forum and plan to share more updates moving forward.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Hi Nick. Thanks for the report from the Catskills. Looks like you have some fit hiking companions.

I want to get out there one of these days. Maybe for one of the campouts.
