Blencathra

Planning to do a day trip to activate Blencathra fairly soon. Am considering the route from Scales Pub up Scales Fell to the summit. Any thoughts on this route or other possible routes. Time is of the essence for this trip and the route planner suggests 2 hours for the Scales Fell route.

The route up Blease Fell from the Blencathra Centre (NY 304256) is a little longer but starts from a little higher, there is no great difference in steepness but you get the spectacular walk along the ridge. If a SW breeze is blowing (as it often is) the Blease Fell route will mean it is behind you going up, and if there is snow lying you will see less of it that way up. Pick either, you won’t be wrong!

Have a great day!

Glyn,
I went up the Hall’s Fell route a couple of weeks ago. Start point is in Threlkeld and it has the merit of being a short quick route. It’s quite steep and a bit scrambley towards the top. Not to be recommended in poor weather as the rock in winter gets a bit greasy, and people have been known to fall of it on occasions.
I descended via Doddick, which is much easier and not much longer, so might suit you better as an ascent route.
