Bespoke Case(s)

I’ve just received a bespoke case for my KX3 from the eBay seller “blackstingray4” here in the UK. Cases seem to be a perennial conundrum amongst hams. I looked at hundreds of ready made Chinese cases such as the orange one in the image which contains my PX3 nicely, but none were suitable for the KX3 in at least one axis. All I had to do was provide overall dimensions. It was pretty much exactly what I had in mind and protects the KX3 from other things knocking it about inside the Pelican 1400, but in addition it can be redeployed in a heartbeat into a rucksack. Think padded camera case divider construction and you’ll be in the ballpark. It is not remotely waterproof- that was never the intention. It is flyweight even though I opted for a more dense foam to help it retain its shape.

I have no connection or affinity with this eBay seller and I hope this is not construed as advertising. The seller was keen to engage with me in order to develope a spreadsheet to automate the pattern sizes from provided dimensions, so other portable radios such as KX2 and Xiegu should be easy to accommodate. For a bespoke service it was very reasonably priced and the seller has great communication skills, but obviously it relies upon a purchaser being able to measure correctly and communicate the information …

Great suggestion. Another option is to make a visit to your local Asian food market and check out the selection of Japanese lunch boxes. If you are lucky, you can find one that will fit your radio perfectly.
