Battery power

Battery holder for 10 rechargeable AA batteries works well as extra power for SOTA expeditions. 12 volt and 2.8 Amp hours. Weight 328 grams (11.5 oz) with holder. Weight to power ratio is similar to a LIFePO4

Hens,

Having an empty cell holder with cable and plug would be handy but the cost of the single rechargeable cells here is more than a rechargeable battery of equivalent capacity, in LiPo or LiFe.

Single use alkaline cells are not expensive but the cost mounts up.

I went down a homebrew route. Built two 4S1P packs, one with 18600 (3500mA) and second with 21700 (5000mA) Li-ION units. Both packs have BMS so to charge them I can crank up voltage on my power supply and connect overnight for charging. Bigger and heavier 5000mA is only 319g.

Smaller 3500mA unit I use with (tr)uSDX and once charge is ok for 3-4 activations. Second unit I use with mcHF QRP and that lasts for 2-3 activations.

Yes, the cost is an issue, I just needed something that was lighter than my LIFePO4 12 volt 8Ah for long hikes and single mountain activation’s
