Anyone using Meshcore off Grid comms ?

Hello all,

Are any of you using Meshcore ? If so what are your results like ? Which band is in use in the UK ? I have only just come across it but it does look interesting.

Here is there website https://meshcore.co.uk/

In Switzerland we have a growing group. Using EU narrow settings on 868 MHz (as does the UK, as far as I know - in fact, I have two nodes from UK in my list, there was tropospheric scatter. There is a YouTube video (TBD channel Meshcore) that said that they got messages from Switzerland).

Local comms is pretty good, with repeaters this stretches to dozens of kilometers. Communication from Switzerland / Bern to Germany / Munich or Germany / Freiburg is not so reliable, although we hear them from time to time.

Communication “on the move” is less reliable, it works best if you advert when arriving at a new location.

Yet another LoRa comms system :joy:

As radio amateurs I would suggest to stick with LoraAPRS or MeshCom (an OE developed Lora messanging with Aprs connection. Using 70cm and not ISM bands)

I’m no expert at all but using Hamnet seems to defeat the object it looks more like Ham Internet rather than Ham Radio ! I think there are too many different systems dividing the interested party’s rather than connecting them. A bit like all the different digital modes and analogue on the VHF/UHF bands

The mesh cloud allows 5 HF hops so HamNet is not needed for it to work. But in the current state is allows cells to interconnect. And in OE HamNet is emergency/offgrid powered and covering vast parts of the country spreading to DL and further.

I think our portable operation “training” with SOTA will help much more than all those devices. Setup of improvised antennas, portable power systems and so on. Let’s only hope we never really need it. Doing it for fun is imho the better option

>> another LoRa system

The good thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from

The MeshCore net that we are operating is on 868 MHz. This also allows non-amateurs to enjoy radio … sort of today’s CB.

Additionally, this is useful in emergency situations. The more people being able to use it, the better.

Many a true word spoken in jest !

Similar thing exists here, a couple of the local radio amateurs have set up nodes. I did not bother as have enough radio activities to keep me occupied. It appears to be an expanding network according to those involved.
