Andre Saunders GM3VLB was a keen island activator. On his death he left a legacy to my radio club (Lothians Radio Society) which was to be used to promote radio activity from Scottish Islands.
This is the third year the award has been running and the 2024 winners are now available.
First place goes to Nick Gretzinger WN2G who activated 8 GM/SI summits in 2024
Second place goes to Ben Lloyd GW4BML who activated 6 GM/SI summits in 2024
A total of 21 different people were active from GM/SI in 2024.
Both Nick and Ben will receive receive a commemorative Quaich and engraved plinth to keep. More details to follow.
The award is running again in 2025 from January 1st to December 31st.
You can read about the rules here.
Please note that this is an award run by the Lothians Radio Society with the approval of the SOTA MT.
I just returned from vacation and found the GM3VLB Scottish islands award in my mail.
I enjoyed my 2023 visit to Scotland so much, I came back in 2024. This time, focusing on the islands. In addition to some wonderful hikes and SOTA activations, I was able to visit the Orkney wireless museum.
With us entering the last quarter of the year, I was interested in how the scoreboard is looking.
It’s been another busy year on the GM/SI summits. There have been 88 activations so far! With Goat Fell, GM/SI-006, being favourite (I was one of them!).
The leaders are into double digit summit numbers. There’s keen rivalry between them. Rumours abound of winter trips to Mull and Skye to try and secure the top spot.
But the leaders should keep an eye over their shoulder for others who aren’t far behind.
