An uptick in 2 meter CW activity in Southern California

There has been a noticeable uptick in 2 meter CW activity here in Southern California. Just a note for those summit activators using this band and mode. I am constantly on the hunt for summits on 2 meter CW and have my spare ICOM 746pro sitting on 144.100 running 100 watts to a Ringo Ranger. I try to call as soon as I seen one posted on the SOTA spotting page. So please don’t be bashful, it’s a great band to use CW on. I hope to log many more. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

@W6LEN

My contribution today was somewhat unintended. Had I thought more it would have been obvious as I was curious to see if any skimmers are “listening” on 2m here in SoCal….apparently so per this…

And thanks for your patience’s while working me.

It’s a tad unfortunate that the SoCal team have defaulted to vertical polarization for CW and SSB but I somewhat understand.

Fun time today and I’m definitely late to the 2m party….

You had a super signal in Huntington Beach. I don’t mind slowing down as much as is needed. I have had this Ringo Ranger up for almost 20 years and only recently begin using it again on 2 meter CW. You were at one of the summits that is on my “bucket list”. I am looking for local “dive up” summits where I can take my card table out and antenna mount and get a summit on the air. I am thinking of taking the ICOM 760pro out to a summit since it also covers 2 meters and I would like to give that a whirl along with HF. Thank you for being out there Paul and don’t be shy, I will always be happy to give you a SOTA contact. 73 for now, de W6LEN Jess

@W6LEN Thanks Jess.

I’m somewhat late to the 2m challenge and have long thought the LA basin ripe for 2m SSB and CW. I think a lot of stations are 2m SSB enabled but it’s hard to get some of them (i think) into the chaser community. Similar thoughts on 1296 which I tried a few times….hardly any chasers but each Friday the WSWS (Western States Weak Signal) group have a check in and sometimes 20+ stations on 1296 SSB. It was fun today and I’ll do two more later in the week from the Los Padres NF assuming it hasn’t all disappeared up in smoke…..

Furthest I have made is 322 miles SSB

Thanks MT for setting up a different challenge…..fortunately (or not?) the world isn’t all HF….

I will be listening for you Paul. By the way, just so you are aware, SSB is not allowed in my shack. I never unpacked the microphones when I bought my radios. So it’s only CW. for me.
