Ponta Delgad Airport (Azores), QCX-transceiver, LiPo battery and cable in cabin baggage. Everything passed without problems.

I had no issues with any of my devices getting through KATL or KRSW. Surface Pro, LiPo, HT, FT818, Scanner, etc. Antennas were in checked baggage.
My GF, OTOH, got busted for sunscreen on the outbound and a bottle of water on the return flight.
Can’t take her anywhere nice…
I bet they will now! Thanks for the chuckle. Hard to believe every TSA AGENT isn’t a ham operator. Maybe they read Harlequins on their down time!
On a flight from the UK to Detroit, the arrival check showed this “thing” in a box. The TSA asked me to open it - it was a paddle-key combination from Kent. The agent said “very nice” and wished me good dx.
LHR Terminal 5 security just relieved me of my Zippy 4200 mAh LiFePO4. They misapplied the 12-V max rule for SLABs. They wouldn’t listen to what I tried to explain. I might be able to get it shipped on and seeing as they’re hard to get that might be worth the expense. I wonder if I should next get one of the packaged ones as those look a bit less home made and state the Wh explicitly.
What a bummer… claim on travel insurance maybe.
To get around this Hobbyking have LiFePo 2S 3000mAhr batteries on sale. Two of them come to £17.54. Dangerous goods express shipping (3 day) from Hong Kong is another £20.30.
They’ll be marked 6.6V.
Meh. Today, it’s just flights on one airline from one airport (Beirut…) that are affected, but air travel security is quite likely going to get stricter…
Qatar Airways ( from x.com )
Effective immediately: Following the directive received from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of the Republic of Lebanon, all passengers flying from Beirut Rafic Harirl International Airport (BEY) are prohibited from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on board flights. The ban applies to both checked and carry-on luggage, as well as cargo, and will be enforced until further notice.
Wonder who will be the first to “experiment” with trying to fly with their brand new FTX-1F…?
Finally I can report an update.
Heathrow apologised for the “incident” and reimbursed me for the Mail and Fly payment. It took a while but complaining paid off in the end.
It’ll be a while before I get my full license (for overseas activations), but I’ve been keeping an eye on this thread.
I’m tempted to make a power bank work, just so that there aren’t any potential issues (security will be well used to people travelling with power banks). Any thoughts?
PS I had a toe nail clipper taken off me at security… so I popped into Boots at the duty free, and bought the exact same one 25 minutes later.
It’s been done.
You can do the complicated way, power bank with USB PD support and a trigger cable that selects the voltage you want. I’m sure I read 12V is now deprecated. The downside with that is you will have another switching PSU right by your radio and antenna. You may be lucky and buy a power bank that is RF quiet. My view is it’s more likely to squag from DC to Daylight so why take the risk.
Just buy a USB power bank that takes 18650 cells. Put 3 cells in the power bank for transport through customs. Remove the 18650s and put them in a 3 cell holder wired for 3S1P to power your radio. No PD issues to deal with. The security people see a USB power pack like the other millions of them they see daily.
See Using 18650 LiIon cells I got the idea off Luc ON7DQ
Works fine with KX2/817/818/705 radios.
I like it… and happen to have one of those power banks. Thanks.
Looks like I’ll be busy in the new year.
Hi,
just gone through airport security at Tenerife south. I was identified as a random Czech (check)! I quipped that I was not from the Czech republic (random felt somewhat more accurate) and the security guard actually got the joke, I think, or maybe he was just understanding and long suffering?
I had three LiPo 3s batteries (two salvaged from a portable Dyson vacuum cleaner, and a R/C LiPo). A PMR radio, FT-4X, power bank, laptop, 2 mobile phones, garmin in-reach and a spaghetti of leads. Security swabbed my hands and bag, ignoring all the radio gear. All clear was the response, “sorry to have bothered you sir!”
KX2 and FT817 are safely in the hold baggage.
