Just a heads up as I travelled through DUB to LHR T2 and back a couple of weeks ago.
I took my FT60 (stock rubber ducky) and FT65 (Diamond RH770) with me in my carry on. I was pulled aside in both DUB and LHR. Not for the FT65, they had no interest in it, but for the FT60.
The FT60 was swabbed in both DUB and LHR. Both security teams said it was because āthe FT60 looks a bit menacingā (and I quote).
All ok though after a swab check and I offered to show my laminated copy of my license but they took my word for it and did not ask to see it. All good.
Side note. DUB now has systems in place so that the liquids rule is no longer enforced. Security seems a lot quicker for that.
LHR T2 was a bit confusing with mixed messaging. They have the hardware in place for liquids enforcement to be dropped but it isnāt active all the time.
I arrived during the cyber attack so everything was paper-based at check-in. I was told liquids were allowed but a maximum carry of 2 litres. At other times liquids are not allowed they said. Very mixed and confusing messaging so my personal take on it is to check before you leave for the airport.
Odd that neither airport was concerned about the FT65. I wonder is it the NiCad battery that caused concern?
It will be the antenna. It will look like it can extend into either an extending baton or a stiletto knife. The same happened to my VX1r at Manchester some years back. Polite words were exchanged with the guy searching and he was having issues with the antenna. I pointed out it ācannot be an issue as you have let my travelling companion through with his handheld and antennaā as I pointed to Geoff G6MXZ (sk) was stood waiting the other side of security listening to ATC and security on his handy at the time.
Ah! I didnāt think of that. Good call.
I had a little look there and have bookmarked this rather interesting looking read for my tea break later.
Airport security seems completely random sometimes.
I was asked (in UK) if I had a prescription for my contact lens fluid. I pointed out that it wasnāt a prescription item⦠he eventually let me go, muttering āsuspiciousā.
Another time, I had a nail clipper with me⦠they took it off me, so I popped into Boots and bought the same one at the airport. ![]()
Best one was when a āfriendā put a rock at the bottom of my rucksack for a laugh⦠it slipped though the liner (being an old beaten up bag). I do remember thinking that it felt heavy, for what I was carryingā¦
Anyway, security stopped me - we emptied the bag and none of us could find anything odd⦠he looked back at the x-ray, and we dug a little deeper to find this bloody rock. I then had to explain why I had no idea where it came from.
They let me travel with the rock⦠![]()
