Activation of Serra do Cume CU/TE-003

de Andrey RZ3EM and Sergey M0MSV

When we booked our tickets from Faial to São Miguel, since there were no direct flights, the only option was a flight with a layover on the island of Terceira. With a three-hour layover, we decided to activate the summit CU/TE-003 (Serra do Cume).

Thanks to the support of amateur radio operators on São Miguel and Terceira, we had previously obtained the contact information for a reliable driver who met us with a name sign at 15:20 UTC at Terceira Airport (on whose walls there was actually a panorama of Serra do Cume  and promptly drove us as close as possible to the summit of CU/TE-003, confirming he would pick us up in two hours at the same spot.

Upon arriving at the summit, there was a squall; in the open terrain, it was impossible to operate on SSB, as the wind would have made it impossible to hear anything.

After looking around, we decided to climb up with our gear to a small building housing the broadcast antennas. It wasn’t easy to climb up and make our way through the terrain without any roads or trails (later we found out that we could have made it much easier by following the cars’ path as they left the site and turning left). Then we could have avoided the scrapes and cuts from the very sharp thorns! 

We managed to set up on a path, between thickets of thorns, with an open view to the northwest. Since the wind was strong, we had to move quickly to set up the radio station, using a suitcase as a table for the transceiver.

At 16:01 UTC, CR26RRC/p came on the air from the summit of CU/TE-003 (Serra do Cume).

Perhaps it was the evening in Europe and the approaching weekend, but the pileup was simply excellent! By 17:00 UTC, when we went QRT, we had made 169 QSOs.

We had 30 minutes left until the time the driver was supposed to pick us up.

It took 10 minutes to pack up the station, 10 minutes for a quick field dinner, and 10 minutes for photos in the strong wind at the Serra do Cume viewpoint.

The driver was punctual, and 20 minutes later we were at Terceira Airport, once again in hot weather and bathed in the gentle, warm sunshine.

The only reminder of our activity was a jacket zipped up to the neck and a hood pulled over our heads.
