Activation of GW/NW-020 Craig Cwm Silyn

As part of my quest to activate the North Wales summits, on Wednesday I set off to Activate GW/NW-020. I parked up at the road head SH 496510, South East of Telysarn. At 0900 the weather was not as forecast, it was grey, grim and damp. The cloud base was at 400m and the summit at 734m. This looked like it was going to be a very uninspiring 2hour climb. I set my GPS to record my track and my compass on 80degrees. After an unrelenting hour’s climb I arrived at Garnedd Goch with its ancient substantial cairn in thick wet fog, I reset my compass to go along the ridge to my destination of Craig Cwm Silyn.

Several times I asked my self why I was doing this walk it was miserable. Soon I was at the Marylin summit and set up my station.
The chasers came good and I soon qualified on 30m. To change bands I had to stand up and adjust the Link Dipole. I suddenly realised that the mist had lowered and I was now bathed in sunshine under a blue sky, How my spirits changed!

Moel Hebog 5km south west and Garnedd Goch 2k

Garnedd Goch 2km South West.

Unfortunately the sunshine was short lived and before I had completed on 20m I was back in the clag again. I packed the station away and reversed my route taking guidance from the substantial walls, my GPS trail and compass. 2 Hours later I was out of the wet mist and back at my car, enjoying a cup of soup. A good day.

The SOTA paradox.
Because you are head down and concentrating on your radio, you are oblivious to your surroundings.
Because you’re a long time on a summit doimg radio, you’re more likely to catch the views when they appear.

How many do you have left David?

I’ve often considered this paradox!
