Hi everyone,
we just came back from an awesome trip in western VO1 (Newfoundland, Canada), and thought i could write a bit about a successful activation and a subsequent attempt.
Activation of VO1/WC-146 (Big North Hill)
The summit is accessible via a gravel service trail. Look for red rock markers on either side of Hwy 1—you’ll spot the hill easily from the road; it has a tower on top. The area has a few scattered houses living off-the-grid. No posted access restrictions, and the gate was open when I visited.
You could probably drive most of the way up with a pickup truck. I chose to walk, since the last ~100 yards seemed like a very steep section. The trail is short, and the views from the top are excellent.

Activation attempt VO1/WC-004 (Tablelands)
We set out to tackle the legendary Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park, a striking, Mars-like plateau formed from ancient mantle rock. With no marked trail and a 45-degree incline of loose rock and scree, the climb was really demanding but we felt great, taking our time. My plan was to summit via the suggested high route near a waterfall and activate.
After hours of navigating unstable terrain and dramatic elevation gain, we hit the massive, ice-covered snowfield which barred us just 200 feet from the summit’s ridge. With no crampons or arresting gear, the risk was too great and we made the tough but smart decision to turn back. The sun was shining, the views were unforgettable, and the experience was challenging and humbling.
Thanks to all chasers, and 73 !!

The Tablelands from afar. We climbed along the lower right edge of the snow field, trying to go around. A cliff would stop us.
Slippery snow on top of hard ice, just above a very steep rocky slope.
Just at our turning point. See the Gros-Morne peak on the far left side.
