A standing activation that did not deserve a standing ovation ...

In order to be able to be QRV at 30-10 m on fitness hikes in the local area during the coming wet and cold season, without sitting on anything but with a fixed mast, I was looking for equipment that was easy and quick to use and, if possible, with components that I already had.
So the only component that was unknown to me was operating in CW while standing.

The equipment finally chosen was: KX2/KXAT2 with flight deck for paddle and paper log, 6 m carbon mast, 4.50 m vertical antenna up ~1 m, 2 guyed radials of 4.20 m each.
The only new component that needed to be built was a carrying strap, comparable to those used for cameras.

During the test run in the shack everything went very well - unfortunately not so much in the real world today on HB/BE-158:

  • it was practically impossible to optimally align the setup for working with paddle and paper log and to keep the vertical antenna pulled tight at the same time (the SWR reacts very sensitively to this)
    – measure taken: the connection box for antenna and radials was attached to the mast and connected via a 0.5 m RG58
  • the prepared paper log with 2 columns did not work because the right column was covered when operating the paddle (this only works for call signs that stay in my head after hearing them, hi)
    – possible measure: turn the paper log more often …

By the way, not quite usual for me today was an almost discharged battery in the KX2 - so I worked on 10-17 m with “only” 5 watts before changing the battery.

Thanks to the chasers for their patience and sorry for those for whom I didn’t have enough time.

Hi dear Heinz,

I guess we will see your new operation style soon as winter and snow approaches.
Hopefully, even if you want to operate standing, perhaps you could bring a light monopod chair? As an example:

Else, you could still find a solid tree to relax and put your back on it…

Looking forward to work you soon again

The way I have addressed the antenna wire slack issue when standing is to use a trekking pole as the attachment point for my unun, with 6’ of coax from the transceiver to the matching unit. It adds a small amount of complexity but eliminates the largest variable in the process.
