A bit of Ben Buie GM/SI-029

SOTA Activation Report – Ben Buie GM/SI-029

Date of Activation: Wednesday, 15th October 2025
Activators: Ben Lloyd @GW4BML & Fraser Wenseth @MM0EFI
Location: Isle of Mull, Scotland

In what can only be described as a serendipitous alignment of amateur radio stars, Fraser (MM0EFI) and I (GW4BML) discovered, through a casual exchange of messages a month prior, that we would both be on the Isle of Mull at the same time. The girls were quick to raise an eyebrow at the “coincidence,” but we assure you, this one was genuine. With the opportunity too good to pass up, we agreed to meet and activate a summit together while the ladies enjoyed a more leisurely day.

Our adventure began in a lay-by near the base of Ben Buie GM/SI-029, where Fraser and Mo met up with me and my crew—Martha, Lyra, and little Arthelia. Mo joined the girls for a beach day at Buie, while Fraser and I set off on our climb.

The route started with a steep grassy incline to the top of the first false summit, this then quickly transitioned into a rocky underfoot section, offering just enough terrain variety to keep things interesting (and our knees guessing). The hike spanned approximately 2.5 miles, filled with lively conversation, mostly rally-related—Fraser and Mo had just served as recovery crew for the Mull Rally the previous weekend, so there was no shortage of stories, there never is when we are both on a hike together.

Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by brisk winds and unfortunately no panoramic views this time, the summit was in mist. We wasted no time setting up our stations. Fraser operated on 145-FM, perched atop the trig stones like a true VHF warrior, while I focused on 7-SSB and CW.

GM4BML/p (Ben): 30 QSOs on 7-SSB & 10 QSOs on 7-CW

Conditions were favourable, and the pile-up was steady. A satisfying activation with solid propagation.

MM0EFI/p (Fraser): 4 QSOs on 145-FM

Notably, a remarkable contact with Don @GW0PLP, approximately 230 miles away, an impressive feat for FM and a testament to Fraser’s operating skill and elevation advantage.

Despite the chill setting in after 30 minutes of operating, spirits remained high. Final calls were made, and once the calls fell silent, we packed up and began our descent.

We returned to Fraser’s Land Rover and made our way to Buie beach to reunite with the girls, who had enjoyed their own adventure in the sand. The activation was a resounding success—good company, good contacts, and just enough wind to remind us we were in Scotland.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the chasers who supported this activation. Your enthusiasm and dedication continue to make SOTA the vibrant community it is.

Until next time, 73, Ben GM4BML/p & Fraser MM0EFI/p

Great report Ben. It was a really nice hike, and much easier than expected for “the toughest hill on Mull”, as I read when researching a route. You and Iclimbed from Glen More, rather than Loch Buie, so had much less ascent.

We’ll need to accidentally meet again soon!

Infamous I’d say.

Wrong context there, but I’m sure we’ve been called much worse! Hahaaa

Classic misquote. It was stars with a small ‘s’.

I’m the only celebrity here. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Great report and snaps!

Absolute 2 meter gangsta and CHAMPION!

Wanna see 70cm get a quick tickle though for added UHF spice though!

You’ve done two activations, both on 2m FM.

What Ben failed to emphasise in his report is, that despite working @GW0PLP Don down in Wales, that it took me half an hour to get another three contacts.

It was damp, cloudy and we had wives and children to get back to. 70cm was the last thing on my mind.
