2026 SOTA Challenge (Part 3)

Hurray a proper explanation of the rule thank you.

Hi Geoff,

While qrz.com is provided with all US calls and addresses from the FCC, it is still the most used ā€œtelephone directoryā€ for hams worldwide, who add their details manually. There are other callsign lookup sites, but none have the number of calls listed on them as qrz.com does - it has become the de facto go-to site to look up a call sign worldwide.

Which is exactly the reason for this challenge, to increase SSB/CW activity on 2m & 70cm.

So the distances have now magically started to show but not for S2S contacts.

I am really looking forward to the challenge. Both as an activator, because most of the times I bring 2m to my activations with the IC-705, and as a chaser, because I recently realized the potential of chasing SOTA from the university club station DK0PT in Regensburg on 2m FM. SSB and CW should increase the possibilities even more!

One question on the scoring for activators though. The multiplier obviously plays a big role. The first post says ā€œmultiplied by the number of unique summits activatedā€, which sounds like any unique activation during the year counts as a multiplier. I assume this is not the case? What is required to have a unique activation count as a multiplier? Does it have to be four QSOs under the rules of the challenge? Or maybe one such QSO is enough?

Thanks for clarifying! Best 73 es HNY!

You need just one QSO for a summit to be activated. For the challenge, it will need to be on 2m/70cm SSB/CW.

Can you explain the scoring please?

With 210 Points you (G4TGJ) are on position 3 (activator score 2026 challenge).
Two other station with less points are on position 1 and 2.

The table appears to be sorted by callsign rather than points.

And disappeared again. I must have used some magic incantation to make them appear but have forgotten it.

It’s not a contest… there is no winner.

Then column ā€œPositionā€ is not necessary at all from my point of view or at least it should be explained how the sorting is done. It is quite different to the ā€œ2024 10m Challengeā€.

The old version may be cached on the edge network that serves you, and should eventually age out over the next 24 hours.

But we have honour rolls in points order.

Indeed.

I had a S2S with G0HIK on 1/1/26, working 144MHz CW each way…it correctly appears for me in the chasers table, but I don’t see an entry for me in the activators challenge…or do I need a total of four chases before a summit counts?

There was no winner to the 2024 10m Challenge. A number of people said challenges appeared to be contests with certificates for overall highest score, highest score per association, so we specifically said that there would be no winner to challenges from 2024 onwards and everyone would be able to obtain a certificate of the scores. ISTR the 2024 challenge sorted scores in score order and should have been by alphabetical call sign order but it was never fixed. This time it is fixed.

I tried 2m ssb from West Lomond GM/SS-154 today but didn’t have any takers. I saw spots for other stations south of the border on 2m ssb but couldn’t hear them. Conditions not as good as last week, and very cold wind on the top, I was glad of my shelter.

The same thing happened to me…we’ll have to keep trying

144 SSB QSO=0

I completely agree that it’s not a competition, but when we open the Roll of Honour it says: ā€œSOTA is not inherently a competitive activity, it’s about individual aspirations and working towards a goal at your own pace. However, it can be fun to see how your progress compares with that of othersā€¦ā€
If the different ā€œChallengesā€ are based on the SOTA program, then the ranking should respect the position according to the number of points, kilometres, QSOs, etc.
Otherwise, following this logic, any of the Roll of Honour lists should simply be displayed in alphabetical order by callsign.

I think it would be a shame if discussion of the challenge gets bogged down in fruitless arguments about competition. Yes, the founders of SOTA wished to minimise the competitive aspect, on the grounds that an excess of competitive zeal might lead participants into taking unjustifiable risks. Yes, we are human beings and competition is baked into our nature, and lets be honest, if the opportunities for competition aren’t there then people will develope them for themselves…like for instance who claims the longest distance contacts! Lets concentrate on the challenge, there is plenty to do just to get the best performance out of our stations!

280 posts so far on this topic is mostly not about being competitive for me it was more about understanding the rules set down for the challenge. I was not thinking of myself and the rules, I was trying to understand it so I could tell my Chasers who where asking me questions and if they could take part. That’s all, so thanks for adding some clarity to what MT expects of us as Activators and the Chasers.
