I’d quite like to get a 2nd MG in 2022. But I’m concentrating on my rock climbing and mountaineering skills at the moment, so its unclear if it will happen before 2023. Here’s a pic of me doing just that yesterday on a crag near Cairn Gorm in MM land…

I’m hoping to do a much longer motorcycle tour this year. To assist in this goal, a new Triumph Tiger 660 Sport has been acquired and will be in service from mid March:

This year I hope to make it over to Freiburg and then also France before returning via Switzerland and South Tirol. In many respects, this is just preparation for 2023 and a trip to Nordkap. I will probably go quad MG sometime this year, but to be honest, once you are hooked on SOTA, the goats mean less and less and the travel potential becomes the big buzz. I’ve got some major mountain passes lined up this year; should be a blast.

  1. Exceed 1,000 chaser points, I’m at 264 as of now.
  2. Do my first activation. I have my sights set on W4G/HC-010, Burnt Mountain - 1003m, 8 points.

I have been resisting posting my targets here. But, here are two of my many.

  1. to make 52 antennas. I am at about 14 right now.
  2. to get to 650 more activator points this year. I have some work to do on this one.
Hmm, I think I will fail on at least one. It always good to set targets then laugh at yourself for first setting a goal and secondly failing to try and not making it.

Got the 4,000 contacts s2s, but still 335 shy of 20,000 points s2s

My subconscious has been working on this idea. Thanks for the invitation to think out loud.
Some of my SOTA goals for 2022 are:
*Finish MG. I’ve got 867 points so far.
*Reach 10k S2S points. 9,564 points to date.
*Make 100 Completes. 14 to go.
*Activate from new regions and Associations.
*Finish S2S WAC. Still need EU and SA S2S QSOs.
*Complete SOTA QRP DXCC. 60 countries and climbing.
*Make 100+ QSOs from one summit. I’ve been close.
*Build some resonant antennas and use my QCX-mini and KX1. Lightening the load.
*Plan and execute a first activation or two.
*Continue learning about the multi-faceted world of SOTA.
Whatever happens, I look forward to QSOs with more of you locally and distantly as cycle 25 blossoms.

And it has…

One goal was to make as many summits as possible on which I have never been. Like so many others, I was very interested in making as many points as possible in the early days. That has subsided. The attraction of the new is much greater. I connected that in this season with whether the mountains are good to walk…

To do this, I visited many summits that I do not yet know and that are as far as possible free of snow and not muddy … So low summits in the southern neighborhood… Switzerland.

Suddenly I remembered that Switzerland has a Lowland Summit Award for exactly that… the first 50 summits I did… now I am the first non-Swiss with this award.

grafik

And it goes on…
If there are chasers for the Lowland Summit Award among you… there are still many lowland summits for me to discover this year… and to activate. Maybe I can help you achieve one of your targets… :grinning:

Congrats, Armin! Have fun activating the summits here, and remember: There are more HB9SOTA awards that leads you to many nice regions in HB9.

I started this thread with the target of doubling my activation score to 256. Last week, while in Wales, I got it to 269 so more than achieved in less than 6 months. The only problem is I have to drive further to get more points now so I doubt if I’ll get that many more for the rest of the year. I shall optimistically aim for 300.

I would like to make at least one Six Meter DX s2s contact on ES skip…I’ve completed many ground wave s2s Six Meter QSO’s, but NEVER an out of state DX s2s contact.…like 700 miles or more distant.

I have made a few 6M contacts to actual SOTA Chasers out of state on ES skip from summits…but no s2s contacts.

The problem is getting two distant SOTA stations on summits, on the same day, at the same time, during ES season…and then actually getting an opening strong enough to facilitate a CW/SSB QSO with QRP power levels and antennas. That’s a lot of needles to thread simultaneously…

Other than that, finishing up my 6th GOAT would be nice…and activating some summits I have never activated before.

Of course, the ultimate goal to to have fun with SOTA, so that is a sure thing.

Now on 318 thanks to a bumper 32 on Friday. New target is to be a third of a goat, a shack sloth and reach 1000 S2S.

My target was 500 points (done) one complete reigon (done but G/SB not G/NP) , 50 completes ( I’m on 49 so should soon have that sorted) and 1000 S2S (more of a work in progress at 882)…
…but I’ve beaten Andy to retirement and am now down to single days at work so I won’t have any excuses - apart from not being able to afford the diesel… Paul

One Andy is properly retired and I start part time 1st Sep. I have to work 50% till 31st Dec to qualify for the bonus. I have 8/12ths earned so it’s worth it for 4 months more then 2 days a week till I get bored.

No bonus in local govt… but I am getting some redundancy which is very welcome… I have been delegating my role and the last few days it seems to be more a case of being available rather than “doing”. I think being available when I’m half way up a summit might put a spanner in the works so I’ve got a few slow days ahead…time to plan the next 500 points.,…Highlights so far…
Toughest One Point GM/SI-223 - partly the 30 mile bike ride that wiped me out before the summit…
Easiest point(s) G/NP-003 in winter - only about an hour including the walk from home…
Best (?) Summit - probably Wild Boar Fell (G/NP-007)and a Brocken spectre

Having reached 500 Uniques on Windelstraw Law, GM/SS-087 in 2020 my target for 2022 was 500 Completes. Unfortunately a good few of the Uniques are in GI and I find them very hard to chase from home. So activating Scottish hills I have already chased looked a good idea - 481 to go so 19 summits to activate in about 3 weeks. Perfectly possible, even in Scotland and so is proved; Just!

Unfortunately weather etc dictated that of the 19 I did activate I had only chased 12 so the score is now 493 and there are only three possibles (two re-measured and one Private) in England and Wales so I will either have to improve my chasing or return to Scotland or possibly visit Eire again or even Belgium. I have not yet looked to see if there are seven “easy” summits a bit west of Dumfries.
I shall have to keep a more carefull eye on the Alerts and spend a lot more time on the local “drive-on” - which I dislike intensely :unamused:

PS There is implied rudeness about Belgium here. No offence intended but my French is awful and I have not driven on the right since 1985 or 6.

Hi Rod,

I have never driven on the right, and we don’t have a nearby RHD country we can access through a tunnel here. So I can relate to your hesitation to embark on that adventure!

Some suggestions: take a more confident RHD driver with you. And maybe it’s better to hire a LHD vehicle in Europe than take your RHD vehicle on the ferry or through the Chunnel.

Good luck reaching your impressive 500 completes!

Driving on the “wrong” side to the UK is trivially easy IF you do it in an LHD car. I’ve driven my car on mainland Europe in the past. It’s challenging.

Its much cheaper to take a car and two people via Le Shuttle to France / Belgium etc than it is by boat to GI/EI so you would be better going there. The boats are even cheaper to Calais but I would not wish the queuing at Dover on my worst enemy. When I go to France in September with XYL Judy we are taking Le Shuttle - now booked and paid for at £200 return with car and two persons, staying 13 days and crossing during the daytime at sensible times.

I am very fond of activating on the continent, accommodation and food is cheaper and accessing / climbing unique complete summits are much easier than in Scotland and Wales. Petrol when I was there last week was around 10p a litre less than what I pay currently in Yorkshire Rod.
