Hi klaus,

I will be listening for you on 40m SSB.
Hope your new microphone works well and the activation is a good one for you.

Hope for a QSO with you later

Hi Klaus,

Thanks very much for the 40m SSB QSO tonight. The new microphone was doing a fine job.

Hope to catch you again soon from another summit.

In reply to M0MDA:

Hi Mick, thanks also fer nice qso…hope on many more qso´s !

to all:
sorry for quick qrt,but after the strong storms today with a lot of rain it was no fun in the mud / deep forest. also a paradise for moskitos
had a lot of problems with antenna because the antenna was under a wet roof of leaves. there are not much good summits here for night activations and doing some dx. about 95% of the summits here have forest/big trees on the top. the only local one that is good for dx is the hummelsberg-summit bw-228 with a free take off in all directions. and build antennas at nighttime in a forest is not easy…so next activation at night is again on hummelsberg. hope dx calls me again, also the summit is the same and the same to work.
but on 20m i get also N4EX in the log as the only dx on the forest antenna.think he has big big ears ! ufb…
so it was a quick activation with 55 qso´s in cw and ssb. the new mic works fine and the test is ok. most qso´s on 30m cw and 40m ssb.
and the biggest thing at this activations and i´m very happy about. i get a nice call from a good friend first time in cw with sending ufb morse code !
thanks mike !!! good one…

tmrw i will activate dm/bw-176 and 233, bands 40,30,20 and 17m cw and ssb.
if condx ok, i will call on 28/24mhc too.but not sure…
both summits are in DLFF-124 for WFF.so maybe i call sometimes on wff qrg´s.
stay a bit on every summit to do some qso´s…antenna is only a triple leg 4x7m or a doublet 2x10m. depends on the summit and vegetation. if place and time i will use both antennas  power 5/10w on cw/ssb.
after loading the log from today i noticed that i have done 6138 qso since i´m back in sota. wow, many chasers out there !!

hope cu tmrw, klaus DF2GN

at home again i see this spot for me at the time i was on 40m

hi,

back home from dm/bw-168  Thanks all who called in,had a nice time on the summit. the clouds moved away and wx turned into sunshine.planned was to build and test a antenna for the low bands. tests are ok and 80m and 160m with good swr and easy tuning. a bit to early for topband, but 80m sigs are ok and lets hope on more. the “quick” antenna test then turned into another 100+ qso activation with good sigs in cw and ssb. cw and ssb on higher bands today only with 5 watts due to the small battery i chosed for the test. antenna was 60mtr long wire with a vertical part abt. 18m high and 40mtr wire up in the trees slightly slooped . more a inverted L… Added 2x20m and 2x40m wire as counterpoise on the ground.antenna direction was to nw, so maybe a bit gain to dir uk on higher bands. higher bands was not planned to work today because i don´t thinked that this antenna worked so fine on 20-10m bands.
had nice qso´s all over europe and some north american dx.also some nice s2s contacts and a “tripple” s2s in ssb,cw and psk with tom on gw/nw-077. ufb s2s on 12m band !
i finished now my work on on the small electret mic for ssb. all settings are done and think it works fine for a qrp station. the goal was to have a good compressed audio with high boost,a bit punchy for qrp but also not overdone and with quality i hope.
antenna works are done, equipment ready…mhhh. what do i next ? ahhh, never tried a wire pyramid till now
thinked about a hf packer amp for difficult conditions for ssb. but only 6db more. don´t know its worth, but i think its nice build and i had long time no smell of solder here…but time is very limited in moment and i will more like to do sota in my freetime in summer. maybe i catch one amp as used … but first i try some more qrp activations on 40-17m in cw and ssb.

hope cu again !

log upload tmrw then…

want to make a photo of the antenna but too long and high wire for my camera…

Hello Klaus
Your antenna worked very well on all bands, your signals were strong on all bands in cw and ssb, 10mtrs not so good with me about 53. your last call on 12mtrs you were peaking to 59+10 pity no callers. Your audio on your new mic was very good.
Always a pleasure to speak to you.
Regards Steve G6LUZ

Hello Klaus,

I agree with Steve. Audio was fine on the four band qso’s we had, and you know the signal reports given by me. Aided by propagation I think the antenna of yesterday was the best yet. I also think you have the KX3 set up nicely.

Best wishes
Mike G6TUH

hi all,
thanks all chasers who worked me or try it on 12m. propagation today was not the best …dx was very weak. also 40m had seen better times  a few problems with rbn spots. so tmrw i will on tour in the area of the lake of constance and will set the alerts a few minutes before i start with activation. hope on good internet connection.
i will start every summit on 12m band around 24.897 amd 24.945 followed by 14.058 and 7034 / 7095 ( will spot qrg´s if qrm on )
hard to get groundwave contacts here in the black forest on 12m. so i hope on hb9´ers or mike who is close to the summits. todays summits dm/bw-276,273 and 519 are with big trees and deep forest on the top. so dx on 20m was very poor.
i used a inv.v antenna at 13mtr up and 5/10watts. on 519 40m worked fine again.
ahh, by the way. thanks all chasers on 40m for really quick qso mode !
so the pile ups are worked in a few minutes ! so i have time for doing 40m cw/ssb on most summits if i have a good antenna for this band…

for all qho woked me on dm/bw-228 on 40m…i was on with a 2mtr up dipole as add on to the 12m j-pole. never thinked that this low antenna worked so well. really simply construction with antenna and feeder made of one piece of wire…

vy 73 and hope cu tmrw…

Hi all,
the last days i had again a bit time to do sota  had some nice contacts around and will say thank you to the chasers.
but as written in sota news i add some different activation styles to my “all bands, all modes” activations… sometimes i see the request for 40m on rtt,but what should i do without an antenna for that ?
most sota buddy know that i´m portable only…no shack at home ! i don´t need that. i like more portable operating. but sometimes i have no time or only want some fresh air and cw to relax without type so many qso´s in the database…only just for fun . i´m often on 40m, but not on every activation.sometimes i´m looking only for dx or single bands. will not do every time the same and the same. i need some more different activations.

so its possible next time …
-multi band, multi mode with staying a few hours on the same summit ( not in winter )
-only higher bands
-160/80/40m next months
-single band, two antennas vertical and horizontal. planned on 40m and 80m next autumn, winter at lupfen tower bw-057 with sloopers, fullsize gp for 80m and halfwave vertical on 40m…
-possible qro ? lets look what yxl says about the costs for a 20Ah lifepo4
-and my goal in the 12m challenge is to stay and be under the top 10  till next year, by limited time and most freetime at weekdays, maybe i add some multis next time.

its possible that i add a low dipole from thin wire for 40m for my gp-ant on my summit tours in black forest. but i post every time in the alert box my antenna and most times my qrp output. so you can see what bands are possible.

ah, no shack at home  at home i had a small swl rig with magnetic loop and perseus rx, only to listen as swl like in old times  wonderful. and my biggest hobby at home is train cw . in moment i don´t like my keying with some errors. i train also to listen plaintext at all speeds…callsigns, plaintext, words and so on up to higher speeds. not so good as years before, but it becomes better and better again. yes, i love cw ! thats my hamradio at home  dits and dahs …every day…
but on sota i call around 23 wpm most times, but i like it to play around with all speed and levels. i like it also to do a fine qso with 12 wpm…less is bad for keying with a paddle.
if there is interest, i will do again some qrs at the end of the pile ups and take the time to work some newcomers on cw. the last time i had not much replys on my cq´s in qrs :frowning:
and please all other chasers…if i calling in qrs,you don´t need to do qrs also

here some photos from todays antenna test ( simple linked gp 12,17,20m ).
works good as resonant antenna at qrp levels without the need for tuning.
the other photos are from yesterdays tour bw-14,15 and 284. othe photos from dm/bw-001 without sota, but with xyl for hiking only :frowning: but i come back there this year…without xyl, but with kx3

hi friends,
another night activation yesterday 01/09/2013 on DM/BW-228. And all comes different as planned
i was qrv with kx3 with qrp 5wtts on cw and 10wtts on ssb. ok, only a few are ssb qso´s , most are cw contacts from the 86 qso´s. and a bit of really nice DX !
planned was dx on 40 and 30m. i get a spot from ZL2HAM at the beginning, but no dx on 30m…heard some JA stations but only called myself for sota chasers.
antenna was a 13m vertical with abt. 14m of wire on it. included 8 radial from abt. 10 to 20m thin wire on the ground. i use thin isolated wire 0,25mm for my radials. i have enough with me. all in pieces from 10mtrs , so i can choose 10,20 or 40m with little connectors. mhhh, like linked radials…

antenna setup was at my best qth near the cliffs at the top of hummelsberg. it took only abt. 1000mtr nightwalk to my qth there.
so what was different to my plans…ok, no dx on 40 and 30m. after that i tried this “short” antenna on 80m and made some qso´s. after that i had some time and looked only for fun if my zm-4 tuner can match this antenna on 160m top band. and it does…like a dummyload on top band, but i made a cq just for fun. hoppla, rbn network catches me and 4 chasers followed in my log. nice i think´d then. good propagation ? its time to do something
i pulled the antenna down and add a 20m radial to the top of the antenna. like a slooped inv.L. . ok, 7 radials are enough, better to have more wire in the air. a quick retuning and again cq sota  i worked all in all 12 chasers on top band, and all total unplanned ! big thing…this 160m stuff gives me more thrill and fun as a qrp´er as my 12m qso´s …total different.
maybe i have more a look now on top band. some antenna work again

after 160m i called cq na on 20m with the same antenna…and that was really fun with a lot of north american dx ! really really nice. only with 5 watts and 3 watts at the end. all qso´s in cw, only one in ssb.
Stations worked on 20m from NA…
N1EU,VE2JCW,N4EX,KG3W,KB2XX,AE4FZ,WI2W,K4PIC,N7CW,W8XN,VA2SG,AD4RE,NS7P…

and also all other chasers from 160,80,40,30 and 20m…a big thank you for listening so late for me !!!
i was at the car park again at 0115 local time. deep night and by only 8°C.
i´m a bit crazy, my xyl says !
today i had also a lot of qso´s from dm/bw-376…
and now my xyl and i are 2 weeks of from work together. so maybe i make a break in sota for this 2 weeks ( maybe a only one night actiavation more? ) ;-)… think i have not much time … a few days in paris and also around on the summits in black forest and swabian alps…but without radio :frowning: ;-)…

hope cuagn ! 73 , Klaus DF2GN

Hi all,
later i´m on DM/BW-042 for another try on top band. hope antenna works as good as on DM/BW-228…make some changes. its a bit early to go for 160m but i will come back after 80m. not sure abt. 160m ssb, depends on conds…maybe i try other bands ( 40-20m ) if antenna works ok there. think the vertical part of the inv.L. today is a bit to long for dx work on 20m.
antenna tody is a simple inv.L. with a all in all lenght from abt. 42m. vertical part is abt. 18m high in a tree there. radials : 2x40m,3x20,4x10m…output 5watts on cw es 10watt on ssb.
next time i will do some tests on top band. hope i can do today so many qso´s again on my most liked band  it would be nice in my test that you listen for me on 160m and give me a call, also you have worked me before on other bands…thanks…
antennas next time are a inv.L 60 and 80m as hf-fuchs. also planned is a t-ant between the trees.
sorry for taking not part in na-event. i like these na-eu s2s so much, but i was 1 week in Paris with xyl…with no radio gear

hi,
and thanks all who called in yesterday on my night activation on dm/bw-042.
that was the last night activation with a longer stay on the summit this year.
4 hours activation time by abt. 6°C at the end…brrrrr…
its getting colder now…
so next time at night activations i will choose quicker qso mode with less activation time. so abt. 1 to 2 hours with no coming back on some bands and not working all bands/modes…
yesterday i had a really nice activation with special looking for 160m contacts…
the inv.L. with many radials had done a great job again. worked with qrp 16 eu chasers on the top band. 15 on cw and 1 on ssb  my first ssb contact on 160m in ssb mode ever. G6TUH Mike was in the log and he was 55 on my kx3.
a quick change to 24mhc at nighttime with my much to long antenna for this band results in 3 contacts…DJ5AV,N4EX and KC3RT…interesting band

This antenna had done a great job on bands from 160 to 30m. later i had done also a few dx qso´s to na chasers with some new ones in the log…at the end i had a really nice s2s with WU8R on W8O/SE-016 in ssb on 20m…

Hope cuagn…73 Klaus DF2GN/p

Hi Klaus,

Thanks for the 40m SSB QSO last night. Unfortunately I do not have space for a top band antenna so I am unable to work you on the band.

I look forward to working you again on another night activation if you have time for SSB and its not too cold for you.

Hello Klaus,

I was very very pleased as well with the 160M SSB contact.

I was pleased also Klaus with the CW Top Band contact. I’ve connected a length of wire, 50ft or so (can’t quite remember), about 5ft/1.5mts up from the base of my Cushcraft MA8040 vertical and added an extra long radial to the base running along the ground into the woods in the opposite direction from the other long wire. The wire attached to the antenna 27ft vertical section at 5ft goes from there upwards and then along the top of a 12ft/4mt high fence and around a 90deg corner along the hedge at the top of the garden. Tuned it to the tx freq’ by winding the wire around a tree branch and trimming (the wire). Didn’t take long but seems to work ok on Top Band and doesn’t upset 80 or 40mts.

Klaus,

Thanks for the great S2S on 20m. Just to let you know, that was the first activation of an Ohio peak (W8O). You were my first DX outside North America and, obviously, the first DX S2S. Those are both all time firsts for W8O. Congratulations!

You were also my first ever DX S2S, so thank you very much for that.

I’ll be activating many of the W8O peaks over the next week and a half. I have next week off of work and will be on every day during the day time hours here.

12.sep.2013 DM/BW-057.
all day long rain and rain…so i decided to climb up dm/bw-057 to go into the lookout tower on the highest point of that hill. and the tower is a wooden one, so very good for antenna support. and its dry in there
antennas are a 40mtr long endfeeded slooper direction NA and a vertical for 40 and 80m ( 1/4wl and 1/2wl fullsize ). signals outside europe was great and inner eu contacts not so loud as on other activations. 160m was in bad shape and i done only 4 contacts on top band. by the way…i had battery problems…or better say…i took the wrong uncharged accu with me :-(. but after installing all these antennas i decided to go on with 3watt cw and 5-8watt ssb. and it works good  after a few qso´s on 160 and 80m i first worked the little pile up on 40m with big signals more from the east. i switched antennas from time to time… 30m was bad… :frowning:
the good thing on my 160m and low band antenna work is that it seems…they are also good dx antennas for higher bands  on 12m i made 7 qso´s also with stateside chasers with my 3 watts. it should be more qso´s, but i don´t like to stay a long time on 12m for a few qso´s and i looking most time only for sota chasers (enough loging work :-)). in the same time i had very lot fun and dx on 20-15m. 17m was the best band this evening with qso´s from the east to the west coast us. many new one chasers in the log. many from W7 area.
closed the station after 102qso´s in the logbook…
many uk chasers was missed in the log, but propagation was bad to uk on 80-30m this night…
the walk down the summit was not so nice, because it was very muddy and 2 times i sit down into the mud  crazy, but for dx ? i do it much more times
this was the last 160m activation the next 2-3 weeks. working late and night shift now.

thanks all who called in,
